How would you plan a look from your boyfriend’s wardrobe?
I’d probably go for his loose shirts with a tank top inside and roll up the sleeves with a pair of leggings and a pair of pumps. Accessorise it with some earrings, a sling bag and aviators. Maybe a ring too!
If you were to steal a garment from your boyfriend’s wardrobe, what would it be?
It will have to be his shirts, jerseys and hoodies, since he’s 6’5” and nothing else will fit me!

What’s your personal style?
As much as I love my heels and dressing up, there’s nothing I love more than chilling in a pair of Converse sneakers and shorts with a loose shirt. Apart from that I’m not really brand conscious. As long as the style is comfy and looks good, the label doesn’t bother me. I basically like being comfy but that doesn’t mean comfy is boring and plain. You can always style up something simple and change the whole look of it.
Dressed In Your Boyfriend’s Clothes? – Bengaluru
If you haven’t yet, then now’s the time to try. Raid his wardrobe for sports jerseys, sweatshirts, hoodies, dress shirts, vests, belts and jackets and give yourself a make-over this month. What do you know…. you might just find it’s a huge turn on for him!

How would you plan a look from your boyfriend’s wardrobe?
When we girl tries to wear something from her boyfriend’s wardrobe, she must first be aware of her body structure. I like to mix a couple of manly garments with something from my wardrobe that has a distinct feminine touch to it. The key is to know your body type. I am very short – just 5 feet 1 inch, so if I were to wear something very loose I would look more tiny and rotund. That’s why it is important to keep your shape in mind while planning the look.

If you were to steal a garment from your boyfriend’s wardrobe, it would be….
His sweatshirt! I like wearing baggy sweatshirts, they’re so comfortable. I personally like the design of a man’s sweatshirt. It has a more a useful feel to it.
What’s your personal style?
Very chic. I like well-tailored pieces and prefer clothing that fits well. Midi skirts are my favourite, as also styles with pleats and ruffles. Feminine, chic and classy is my style.

‘Chamak Patti’ : Sahar Zaman’s stylish Jewellery and Home Décor Line.
In her artistic explorations, Sahar Zaman, who is a Political Newscaster, Arts Journalist, Curator, Designer and Creative Entrepreneur, her intrinsic “style” has always preceded other considerations. Sahar’s creative juices received inspiration as a true artist does, from the apparent mundane namely reflective stickers, that enhance the visage of speeding trucks and road safety signages that glow in the dark. Sahar’s avant grade sensibility is expressed in her “Chamak Patti” creations of exotic jewellery and home décor products, with the use of this reflective sticker in the most unique way. The products made and designed by her have enjoyed pride of place at prestigious public places like the HTT (Heritage Transport Museum), India’s first international transport museum in Manesar. The work at the museum is a 20 feet by 22 feet metal shutter. Her works adorn the homes of India’s well known and have been praised by international designers such as Marcel Wanders and Fabio Novembre. She participated with the display of a Chamak Patti wall installation at the India Design fair 2013, where Novembre said, “Your works are happy and confident.” Pinakin Patel added, “Chamak Patti is gorgeous and it deserves to be taken to the next level.”

At “Chamak Patti”, Sahar works with sheets of reflective sticker which are tediously hand cut by her and used in patterns of her design. The venture started with Sahar decorating storage trunks with these stickers. But she got a positive response from her family and friends, which in turn made her expand to table tops, wall installation, wooden furniture, jewelery, glass bottles and other homeware such as bowls, trays and wine glasses.

Says Sahar, “My brand ‘Chamak Patti’ is an alchemy of all that I have experienced in my 14 odd years, spent in two diametrically opposite worlds of political news journalism and the arts.” She elaborates, “Luxury brands are viewed by consumers as one including a range of products that comprise associations, about a high level of price, quality, aesthetics, rarity and extraordinariness and in that, my ‘Chamak Patti’ is a luxury brand. This brand has a mind and style of its own and an inherent element of surprise, that prepares to savour the joy of ‘expecting the unexpected,’ and in that keeping the essence of the ‘Chamak Patti’ brand vibrant and alive.”

“Chamak Patti” means happiness, a product line that invokes emotions, which Sahar has designed, specifically with the idea for spreading joy, for instance to match your cheerful bright coloured cook ‘n’ serve pots with dinner sets and inspire joy in the kitchen, which further extends to Sahar’s call…“Let’s make our homes an inspirational creative space!” – a motivating “mantra” for creating the ‘Chamak Patti’ home décor range.

The Crusading Vintner – Hyderabad
When you’re known by the company you work for, it says a lot about your involvement and dedication. Meet Pedhapally Kishan who used to be popular as Sula Kishan till he worked for the brand and is now being addressed as Charosa Kishan. He started his career as a model in 1995 and in 1997 made his way into the liquor industry. After working with vodka and scotch companies he moved to the wine industry and today, he is known as the man who has introduced premium wines to Telangana and AP since 2004. In a tete-a-tete with Ritz, Kishan talks about his love for wine, his sojourn with two different vineyards and how he is the only man in the city to fight for tax rebates on wine.
[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘flash'” lightbox=”true”]
If you ask Pedhapally Kishan how he introduced wine to Hyderabad, he will take you through a few flashbacks – from 1995, his first step as a model, to 2004 when his passion for wine turned into a reality. Kishan shares, “My career went from modelling to the liquor industry. From 1999 to 2004, I worked with a fine wine brand called Rivera, after which I moved to Sula and launched in Hyderabad.”
Kishan’s passion for wine teamed with dedication, discipline, hard work, and the support of his well wishers has been his USP to establish the brand in South. “I worked as the Zonal Manager for Sula until 2013 and a year after that I decided it was time to move ahead. In 2014 I launched another wine brand – Charosa, led by Ajit Gulabchand. Within six months I’ve achieved a 22% market share in the premium wine segment,” he says.

Ask him how the wine industry is doing and he says it’s always been growing and has never faced a lull. “People travel internationally a lot, especially in the last 30 years. Today, looking at the growth so far, it’s safe to say that the wine industry will only grow further”, he says. So while the growth of wine in the Indian market is still up and coming, Kishan informs us that Eastern Europe, Brazil, Croatia, Georgia and the likes, are cities that have high wine consumption.

Fending for his passion, Kishan took it upon himself to represent the wine industry in Telangana and AP. He shares with us that the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2012 suddenly hiked the VAT on domestic (Indian) manufactured wine in and from the then existing rate of 70% to an abnormal high of 150%, while keeping the VAT on imported wines at the same rate 70%. Being the only one fighting for tax reductions on the label fee for wine, Kishan says, “I brought down the label fee from two lakh rupees to ten thousand rupees. Sadly though, I was and am the only person to represent the wine industry in Telangana and AP over this issue.”
What is it about this industry that makes Kishan, not only the go-to man for wine but also the only one fighting for its tax rebate? Well, in his words, “After my job at Rivera, I found that selling wine came to me most naturally. My name is now recognised with wine and many people believe I am lucky for them as well.”

Fighting for a cause – Coimbatore
For someone who always wondered how we can sustain the resources we have, the incredibly large-hearted and spirited Vice-Chairperson of Pricol, Vanitha Mohan is exactly where she wanted to be. In conversation with RITZ, she tells us about her work and her passion.
[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘flash'” lightbox=”true”]
Being the vice chairman of a leading automotive components and precision engineered products manufacturing company, Vanitha looks into the financial aspect of it as well as the corporate social responsibility.
Ask her how Siruthuli came about and what it does and she informs us, “In 2003 Coimbatore witnessed its worst phase with ground water table levels depleted and the green cover being lost massively. Drinking water started becoming a demand commodity. The land of River Noyyal was scorching and covered with dust and Coimbatore was emanating heat with little water and green cover to support it”.

When the citizens started realising the issue and wanted to help, they came together to form Siruthuli – an NGO that addresses water and environmental problems of that region. The name Siruthuli, means ‘a tiny drop’ and was formed as a Trust by a few conscientious corporate business houses of Coimbatore. “Siruthuli stepped up into a large organisation when we got into checking up on water issues, lost green cover and lots of garbage that was seen in and around the city. We work on the four pillars of the NGO – water watch, green guard, managing waste and spread the word”, explains Vanitha.
She believes in the philosophy that water harvesting alone isn’t enough to help sustain water resources. One must involve the people and the citizens in conserving water and water bodies. Which is exactly why, today, Siruthuli has succeeded in saving the city.

The only major setbacks the NGO faced while working its way up was that the government was initially skeptical about siding this project. “This is something that has to be done. We tried to create a good PPT model and tell them what was happening. But the government can only do so much,” she comments.
How does one become a part of Siruthuli?
Vanitha says there are different plans for different corporates. But a lot of clubs like the Lions Club, the Rotary club and trade bodies too do get involved and volunteer. “Honestly, no one knew about the large water body in the middle of the city. We cleaned it up and now the Noyyal river flows through the city. The river is connected to all the water bodies”, she says.
Ask her about the successful spate Siruthuli has had and she says, “When we started cleaning up the Periekulam there was a sense of ownership that arose from the people. We got them to get involved, and took to social media to invite people. The first time we had about two thousand people attend the clean up event and the following weekend we had a massive ten thousand people show up! I felt like people were filling up the gaps in the city and that’s been our most successful victory so far. People have now started taking ownership of the city, they’ve realised what their role as a citizen is.”

For someone who is so passionate about the cause, her inspiration has been the late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. “Dr Kalam used to appreciate our work. He has visited us a few times and gave us lot encouragement from his side,” she informs.
Now, their major focus is on schools and colleges. “Every Friday they have something called Sittukaludan where kids from 5 to 6 schools are taught about what needs to be done and how they can participate. During summer, we take them to different plants to show them around and try and teach them about reducing waste,” shares Vanita.
Between Pricol and Siruthuli, most of Vanitha’s time is taken up as they have to keep thinking up new ways to clean water and manage the waste. But on days when she is not either being Vice Chairperson for Pricol or helping with Siruthuli, she’s relaxing listening to either Tamil or old Hindi music.
As we sign off we ask her about how she manages both her jobs, and to that she says, “One is my bread and butter while the other is my passion. There are different aspects to life and it’s about moving from commitment to passion.” Beautifully put!
Rejuvenating The Senses – Hyderabad
Down on Road No. 45, Jubilee Hills, you will come across a store that screams fun, beauty and creativity. A store called Room Therapy run by Sona Reddy. She talks to us about how the brand went from a studio at her house to a full-fledged store.
[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘flash'” lightbox=”true”]
Sona has moved careers from being a budding architect in Bengaluru to being a field engineer in Los Angeles and finally settling down to what was originally her retirement plan – opening a specialty store. “I hold a Master’s degree in architecture and construction management, along with worthy work experience at a reputed firm in Bengaluru as a junior architect. Then I moved on to become a field engineer in Robert F Kennedy School, LAUSD. But after 4 years in that field I moved to Hyderabad to start something on my own,” tells Sona Reddy.
Her passion for creating a home décor store was no more then just a dream, she came to Hyderabad to make sure it became a reality and in 2014 it did. “Room Therapy first started as a small studio in my house and in 2014 I decided to open the store”, she informs. If this was always the plan, ask her what stopped her and she says she just needed the right space, time and money, but once she found the space in Jubilee Hills, there was no holding back.
For her, creativity comes naturally and there’s no doubt that she strongly believes in creating a concept of a home that spells an individual’s personal style. “What sets Room Therapy apart from the other décor stores in the market is that our style is our own. It’s borrowed and influenced by a classical, contemporary mix of old and new, but ultimately it’s a great fusion which is hard to ape,” she says.
Walk into the store through the bright blue that welcomes you and you’ll see exactly what she means. The high shelves on one side display different vases and pots in shades of blue and turquoise, while shelves around the store hold different kinds of cushions, vintage and distressed photo frames, wooden showpieces, lampshades and everything else to do with home décor. The store even houses industrial lampshades, wall mirrors, quirky and rustic buckets, furniture, and carpets. The two-storied building even displays paintings on the first floor.
Some of their products allow for customisation as well. “We used to do this a lot earlier but now we stick to limited options like choosing the colour, handles, size and we’ve done that because we don’t want to change too much of the original design”, she says.
What was initially her retirement plan, is now already in motion and has just completed a year of being open. Sona’s plans for retirement are now to do nothing but attend flea markets that she’s addicted to, as well as take care of her family and her dogs

Designing Out Of The Box – Chennai
While walking in Besant Nagar this store’s window will definitely catch your eye. But as you walk through the big wooden doors nothing will prepare you for what you’re about to see. This tastefully quirky store grabs you by the eyeballs, not just with the products they are selling but the design of the store as well.
[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘flash'” lightbox=”true”]
Shahin Ansari the owner of the Maalgaadi tells us the story of how she conceptualized and named the store. She says, “The Idea for the store developed about three years ago during a brain storming session with my mother; we then went and approached Vivek Karunakaran and his wife Shreya. The space is something we already had, but the ideas for it have completely changed to something better than what we had in mind.”
The idea started with the space being clean and polished while the products remained on the quirky side. They wanted the space to be very refined. But as they travelled and researched looks for the store they soon realised they should be doing the complete opposite of what they had planned and that’s when they decided to go with – an industrial feel to the store. She goes on to say, “A lot of the influence of the store is from Europe and a few stores in Mumbai and Delhi that we visited while looking for designs.”
As the shop was being constructed the ideas kept changing as well, the space where the cash counter is for example, was supposed to be for the railing of the stairs but once the stairs were done, they liked it without a railing, so the key design was used for the cash counter. This design was inspired by some of the coasters that they were planning to retail at the store.
“We decided to go with a very raw feel for to the interiors, even though we had started out with a polished look in mind. So the floor and walls are exposed cement with a shaded touch to give it a very authentic feel. One wall we decided to decorate with nuts and bolts in the shape of a hot air balloon because all our ideas for the store came from travelling and this is a symbol of that,” explains the proud owner.
On another wall they have it decorated with nails and yarn in the shape of a suitcase, horn and hot air balloon, again sticking to the theme. The railway cabinet which holds the trinkets for hair and bracelets was a one-off piece, says Shahin. She goes on to add, “We got this piece from Bengaluru and we were so lucky to find it in the colour scheme of the store, which is pink, teal and yellow. We have had some customers who have wanted to buy it but that’s one thing we will not part with.”
The section of the store on the first floor is from a place in Hyderabad called DQ that deals with brands like Happily Unmarried, Chumbak and they have been with Maalgaadi from the time of its inception. Such products bring a young feel to the store and they add to the decor of the store as well. “These products are affordable and are great gifting ideas,” tells Shahin. The ground floor of the store has garments that are mostly from well-known designers. Apart from that Shahin says, “We are constantly looking for upcoming designers with new, quirky and fun looks that we can feature in the store. The only challenge there is quality,” she tells.
Maalgaadi is looking to expand to another store in the city as future plans hold for now, but Shahin hopes she will soon be able to take her unique concept store abroad and market it to its optimum potential
Walking Through Wonderland – Bengaluru
From colours galore, to quirky prints and kitschy designs, the Chumbak Home store on Bengaluru’s CMH Road is a riot of creativity, unique concept and happiness unlimited. While Yo Yo Mani welcomes you through the door, brand specific creatures like owls and elephants watch over you as you take time to walk through this magic maze of inventiveness.
[wzslider autoplay=”true” transition=”‘flash'” lightbox=”true”]
It is inspired by the bold colours of India – orange, yellow, teal, green and hot pink – shades that have also been synonymous with brand Chumbak so far. Yet, the subtle differences in brand specifics can’t be ignored. From a quirky brand that was once associated with moustache, chappal and turban patterns to the more upscale geometric and floral prints, the Chumbak interiors and home decor range is vastly different from its previously unorthodox predecessor.
Says Vivek Prabhakar, Founder and Chief Executive of the brand, “Chumbak Home is meant to be that accent piece in your house. You are not meant to come here and decide to decorate your entire home with our merchandise.” Walking through the store is like a journey of absolute discovery. From the peppy combination of retro hits and sing-along kind of songs that blast away from hidden speakers, to the introductory wall displaying new merchandise that almost never looks like what it did a week ago, the decor of the store is constantly evolving and so are the designs.
With creative use of installations be it in the funky treatment of a ceiling fan or the collection of lights in lime green holders that dazzle the path that leads to the upper level of the store, everything in Chumbak Home speaks of highly creative minds with a twist. From unique crockery and dining accessories like table mats and napkin rings, to a bold range of lamp shades with distinctive holders, quirky wall art, silly jars and candle holders, pretty T-lights and exotic bird cages, you’re bound to walk out with your bags full, should you choose to enter this store.
“We’re also manufacturing furniture – sofas, tables, chairs and ottomans, storage units and poufs. The new design aesthetic for the brand is very different from what it used to be before,” tells Vivek. Considering that their clients are primarily women, aged between 25 and 35, Vivek and his team have chosen to delve deeper into the female mind, understanding what they want, their preference of colours and texture and the little idiosyncrasies that appease them, before planning the line and the interiors of the store.
“Our aim was simple, we wanted everyone who walked into the store to leave happy; irrespective of whether or not they made a purchase. Hence everything that you see, the way displays have been planned, the manner in which we have grouped designs, new products highlighted in a particular fashion – the sole aim is to see the customer walk out in a happy frame of mind,” explains Vivek.
The boblets outside change with the season, as do the interiors of the store. Space has been creatively used and designed in every nook and cranny. The display area below the stairway changes as per the occasion – it presently sports a very monsoon look and feel to it. Clever lighting, unfinished rough hewn walls, a hanging stairway and walls accented in bright pops of colour add that quirky element. Smart displays, well-planned grouping techniques and uncomplicated arrangement also add to the novelty of the store
