Bhutan King to visit India

Bhutan King Jigme Wangchuk will be visiting India today. He will be accompanied by Bhutan’s foreign minister Dr. Tandi Dorji and other senior officials. The 3 day visit comes at the invitation of President Droupadi Murmu.
The visit will give both India and Bhutan an opportunity to evaluate their bilateral cooperation and to advance their bilateral partnership.


During his visit, the King will call on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President Droupadi Murmu.
India has been a top trading partner of Bhutan and is the primary source of investments. India has also been assisting Bhutan’s socio-economic development since the 1960’s when the five year plans were launched there.
The basic framework of India-Bhutan relations is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed by both the countries in 1949 and renewed in 2007. The bilateral ties have been maintained by regular high-level exchanges between both countries.

Rahul Gandhi to challenge conviction order in Surat court

Rahul Gandhi is proceeding to file an appeal in the Sessions court of Surat to set aside the order of the Magistrate convicting him in a defamation case. He will also seek an interim stay on the order of conviction which would restore his membership to the Lok Sabha.


Rahul will be accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and the Chief Ministers of three Congress ruled states- Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He will be represented in court by senior advocate RS Cheema.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge stated that party leaders will be going to Surat to lend moral support to Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, Gujarat Congress party workers have gathered outside the District and Sessions Court in Surat to show support to Rahul Gandhi.

US Vice President visits grandfather’s home in Zambia

US Vice President Kamala Harris who is currently on a tour to Zambia, visited the home of her maternal grandfather PV Gopalan, an Indian civil servant, who was deputed to the government of Zambia as Director of Relief Measures and Refugees by the Indian government in 1966. He also served as an advisor to Zambia’s first president Kenneth Kaunda. He returned to India in 1969 and took charge of the Office of the Joint Secretary to the government of India in the Ministry of Rehabilitation.


Kamala Harris became nostalgic and told reporters that her visit to Zambia held a special significance for her and that she visited the country as a young girl when her grandfather worked in Zambia.
The US embassy in Lusaka managed to trace the spot where the Gopalan family lived but the structure was no longer there. The property now belongs to Madison Group, a Zambian group of companies.

PM Modi wishes Pope Francis a speedy recovery

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished Pope Francis a speedy recovery on Twitter. The Pontiff was admitted in hospital for a bronchitis infection on Wednesday. He was given intravenous antibiotics and has shown clear improvement.


According to the Vatican. the Pope could be discharged from the hospital in the next few days. After the Pope’s weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square on Wednesday, he was admitted to Gemelli hospital in Rome after he complained of breathing problems. After the clinical check-up and tests, the doctors said that the Pope had bronchitis and were administering antibiotic therapy to treat him.
Pope Francis had suffered from severe pneumonia during his younger days and had a part of a lung removed.
Recently, due to pain in his right knee, the Pope is often seen using a walking stick or a wheelchair.

Donald Trump indicted over hush money payments

Former US President Donald Trump has become the first former US President to face criminal charges. A New York grand jury has indicted the 76 year old Republican over hush money payments made to a porn star named Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign.
Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg’s office confirmed that it had contacted Trump’s lawyers to coordinate his surrender.


Donald Trump has slammed the indictment terming it as ”political persecution and election interference” and vowed that it would backfire on President Joe Biden.
Besides this, Trump also faces felony investigations in Georgia relating to the 2020 election and in Washington over the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capital by the ex-president’s supporters who hoped to keep him in office after his loss to Joe Biden.

Pope Francis in hospital for respiratory infection

Pope Francis was admitted to a hospital in Rome on Wednesday for a respiratory infection. According to the Vatican, the 86 year old Pope will have to spend a few days in the hospital.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated that the Pope had complained of some breathing difficulties recently. He was therefore admitted to Gemelli hospital for medical checks. A Covid-19 infection has been ruled out.


This month, the Pontiff had completed 10 years as head of the Catholic church. On hearing of the Pope’s illness, many people sent in messages expressing concern and offered their prayers.The Vatican spokesperson disclosed that the Pope expressed his gratitude and is touched by the messages.
The Pope has been using a wheelchair in recent months due to chronic knee pain. His health has become a subject of speculation, particularly if he will follow the example set by the former Pope and retire if he cannot continue.

Rahul Gandhi gets notice to vacate his bungalow

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha after getting an order of conviction in a criminal defamation case has received a notice from the House committee to vacate his bungalow within 30 days. This development is believed to escalate the political fight between the BJP and the Congress and its allies.


His official residence-12 Tughlak Lane was allotted to him after he won his first Lok Sabha election from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in 2004. The House committee that has 11 members from different parties and chaired by BJP MP C R Patil issued the notice and stated that sending a notice of eviction was just a matter of formality as once an MP loses his membership, all privileges and perks have to be given up.
A Congress leader told the press that the party is confident that a higher court will stay the order of conviction and it would reinstate Rahul Gandhi as an MP.

US School shooter identified as transgender

Police have identified the shooter of a recent shooting in Covenant School in the US as Audrey Elizabeth Hale. He is said to be a transgender. The incident took place on Monday the 27 of March
A video that was released shows Nashville, Tennessee. police officers storming a private Christian grade school before confronting and fatally shooting down the attacker who killed three 9 year old students and three staff members.


According to the police, Hale had a detailed, hand-drawn map of the school showing various entry points and that Hale was armed with a rifle and a 9mm pistol. He is said to be a former student of Covenant School and is believed to have singled out the school for attack as he bore resentment for having to go to that school. However, the victims were said to be targeted at random.
It was discovered that Hale had planned to carry out more shootings at other locations as well.

Child dies after getting trapped in a lift in Delhi

In a tragic incident, a 9 year old boy lost his life after he got stuck in a lift in a building in West Delhi’s Vikaspuri area on the 24th of March. He has been identified as Ashish who lived in Sitapuri area with his parents who do laundry work.


It has been reported that Ashish’s mother Rekha had gone to the top floor of a building to deliver clothes after ironing them and left him in the shop. However, he followed her there and tried going up in the lift. Tragically, the lift got stuck and Ashish got trapped.
According to the police, the child tried to enter the lift when its doors were closing and ended up getting stuck in between the panel of the lift. After the police was informed about this incident, they rushed to the spot and managed to retrieve the child and take him to the hospital but the doctors declared the child dead.
The Vikaspuri police station is investigating the matter and more details are awaited.

Mamata Banerjee welcomes President Murmu with dance and drums

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed President Droupadi Murmu by playing a tribal drum. She also joined performers of a tribal dance. The President was seen enjoying the event with a smile on her face.


Later, while delivering her speech, Mamata Banerjee requested the President to protect the Constitution.This programme was organised by the West Bengal state government at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. The Governor CV Ananda Bose was also present at the event.
It is reported that even though the leaders of the opposition parties were invited, they did not attend the event. However, Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP who is the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly claimed that he was not invited to the event. Trinamool Congress leaders claimed this charge as baseless and accused the BJP leaders of boycotting the President’s programme despite being invited.

Vatican to send Pope’s message of hope into space

The Vatican has announced that it will send a message of faith and hope delivered by Pope Francis in 2020 in the midst of the coronavirus lockdown into space. The speech of the Pope praying alone in an empty St. Peter’s Square has been compiled into a ”nanobook” measuring less than two millimetres wide. It will be launched into orbit on June 10.

It will go around the earth on a satellite at an altitude of about 525 kilometres. The ”Spei Satelles”(Satellites of Hope in Latin) project is being coordinated by the Italian Space Agency with many Italian institutions. It will allow the Holy Father’s words of hope to cross the borders of the earth and reach the greatest number of people on our troubled planet.
Earlier in 2017, the Pope held a video call with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and asked them about ”man’s place in the universe”.

Puducherry Congress to hold fast to protest Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

The Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee is holding a dawn to dusk fast today to condemn the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as member of Parliament.


Senior Congress leader and Former Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanaswamy during a protest rally held yesterday said that Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification is a clear case of political vendetta that has been unleashed by the Bharatiya Janata Party headed NDA government at the Centre. According to him, the Central government was trying to suppress the opposition but they would continue their protests unabated.
As Rahul Gandhi was convicted and sentenced to a two year prison term on March 23 in a criminal defamation case over his ”Modi surname” remark, he has been disqualified from Parliament from the date of his conviction.

Washington based Indian journalist attacked by Khalistan supporters

Lalit Jha, a Washington based Indian journalist was physically attacked and verbally abused by Khalistan supporters in Washington while he was covering a pro-Khalistan protest outside the Indian Embassy on the 25th of March.


The Indian Embassy in the US has condemned this attack on a senior Indian journalist and also thanked the law enforcement agencies for their prompt response in the matter. Lalit Jha was hit on his left ear with two sticks by the Khalistan supporters and he shared a video on his Twitter handle. It was the US Secret Service that protected him and helped him to complete his job. Lalit Jha thanked the Secret Service for protecting him. He said that he had called 911 as he feared his safety, when he spotted Secret Service officers and narrated the incident to them.
He has however decided not to take action against those who attacked him. There have been multiple protests by supporters of Khalistan outside the Indian Embassy and the San Francisco Consulate. The Indian Consulate in San Francisco was also attacked on March 20th.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the US condemns the acts of violence against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and said that the US is committed to the safety and security of Indian diplomats.
