Prime Minister Modi hosts dinner for outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a dinner for the outgoing President of India Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi yesterday. Union Cabinet Ministers, Chief Ministers of various states, Padma awardees and many other dignitaries attended the farewell dinner.


President elect Droupadi Murmi was also present at the event. The outgoing President’s term ends on July 25. Many tribal leaders also were in attendance. Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and other members of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet graced the occasion. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also attended the event. Droupadi Murmu will be sworn in on Monday and will take oath at the Central Hall of Parliament.

Droupadi Murmu becomes India’s first tribal woman President

Droupadi Murmu created history as she is the first Adivasi and second woman to become India’s President. She defeated Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha by securing 64.03 percent of the total votes polled. She bagged 2824 votes out of the total 4701 votes leaving just 1877 votes for the Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.


Murmu, 64, was elected two terms in the Odisha Assembly in 2000 and 2004. She was sworn in as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand in 2015. She has become the 15th President of India and the Supreme Commander of India’s Armed Forces. Many people are happy that a tribal woman has assumed the top post and have sent in their congratulations and best wishes.
Murmu is well educated and hails from the family of a village headman. She will be administered the Presidential oath of office by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana at a ceremony in the Central Hall of Parliament on July 25.

Keys of AIADMK Headquarters handed over to EPS and team

The seal that was put in the AIADMK headquarters was removed by revenue officials in the presence of police personnel and senior party leaders. It was sealed by the revenue authorities after violence broke out between supporters of Edappadi K. Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam.


Former Law Minister Shanmugham took media persons around the party headquarters and showed the stones that were hurled during the clash that took place on July11. Broken furniture and damaged computers were lying around.
The Madras High Court passed orders quashing the order of the Revenue Divisional Officer that sealed the AIADMK headquarters on July 11. It directed the RDO to hand over the keys to former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who filed a petition challenging the sealing of the party headquarters. The court also ordered police protection to be provided to the headquarters round the clock.

Indian businessman Gautam Adani has overtaken Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates to become the 4th richest person in the world. It is stated that the 60 year old business tycoon’s net worth reached $115.5 billion overtaking Bill Gates net worth of $104.6 billion.

Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX tops the list with $235.8 billion. Musk was involved in a huge controversy when he bid to buy Twitter and abandoned his bid later on.
Adani has a conglomerate spanning ports, mines and green energy. Mukesh Ambani ranks 10th on the list with $90 billion. Some of Adani Group’s listed stocks have soared more than 600 percent . He recently overtook Ambani as Asia’s richest person.

Sonia Gandhi to be questioned by ED today

Congress President Sonia Gandhi will be questioned by the Enforcement Directorate today over the National Herald case. This is the first time that any federal probe agency will be questioning Sonia.


Earlier, the ED had questioned Rahul Gandhi for over 50 hours over a span of five days at the ED’s headquarters in Delhi. Congress party workers have planned a nationwide protest against the ED’s questioning of Sonia Gandhi. They feel that the government is misusing central agencies to target opposition leaders. The state units will hold protests in their respective areas.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that ”Congress will stand united with Sonia Gandhi.” Party workers will gather at the Congress headquarters in Akbar Road from where Sonia will leave for the ED office.

Two year old boy drowns during his birthday party

A two year old boy drowned in the swimming pool of a bungalow in Lonavala in Maharashtra where his family was celebrating his birthday. The family had booked the bungalow for the child’s birthday celebrations.


Tragedy struck when the toddler fell into the swimming pool outside the bungalow. The parents and other family members were busy with the preparations on the first floor of the bungalow when the incident took place.
When the family members realised that the boy was missing, it was too late because by then, the boy had already drowned in the swimming pool. After a frantic search, they found his body in the pool. A case of accidental death has been registered.

By this scheme, all people who are above the age of 18 and who have completed 6 months from the date of administration of the second dose of the Covid vaccine are eligible to get a free precaution dose for the next 75 days from July 15 to September 30, 2022.

Manmohan Singh comes in wheelchair to vote in the presidential election

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh came in a wheelchair to cast his vote in the presidential election. Voting took place by secret ballot in Parliament and in state legislatures across the country yesterday to elect a new President of India.


The two main contenders for the post are Droupadi Murmu, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate and the opposition candidate is Yashwant Sinha. Manmohan Singh had taken leave for the winter session of Parliament last year for health reasons. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi for weakness following a fever. He was discharged from hospital on October 31.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manmohan Singh had cast their votes in the very first hour of voting. Many people wished Manmohan Singh a speedy recovery and commented that he was a real inspiration.

Increased screening of international passengers due to monkeypox scare

India has confirmed the second case of monkeypox in Kannur district of Kerala. Due to this, the Centre has directed all state airport and port health officers to ensure health screening of all international travellers to prevent the spread of the infection.


The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has also reviewed the functioning of health screening of international travellers arriving in India at airports and ports. The Ministry has issued guidelines that international passengers should avoid close contact with sick people and with dead or alive wild animals. It also ensured suitable linkages with hospital facilities earmarked to each port of entry for timely referral and isolation.
Monkeypox is supposed to be caused by a virus transmitted to humans from animals with symptoms similar to smallpox but clinically less severe according to the World Health Organization.

Napier Bridge in Chennai painted like a chess board

Chennai will be hosting the 44th Chess Olympiad from the 28th July to the 10th of August this year. More than 2000 players will be participating in the event.
The painting has evoked a mixed response from netizens. Some felt that it was awesome while others felt that it would be a source of distraction for drivers. One person even said that he felt hypnotized.


For the first time in nearly 100 years in the history of the Chess Olympiad, India is playing host. A total of 188 countries have registered for the event. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first ever torch relay for the Chess Olympiad. Chess is supposed to have its origin in India and PM Modi stated ”We are delighted to see chess return to its birthplace and celebrate its success in the form of the Chess Olympiad.”

Margaret Alva is the Opposition’s vice presidential candidate

Former Union Minister Margaret Alva has been declared the Opposition’s candidate for the vice presidential election. The election is slated for the 6th of August.
Margaret Alva has been a Member of Parliament for around 30 years. She served as Union Minister for several terms under the Congress government. She is a lawyer, social worker and trade unionist. She was born on April 14, 1942 in Mangalore, Karnataka.


Margaret Alva also served as Governor of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Goa and Gujarat. She was part of some of the major committees that involved women’s rights like the Dowry Prohibition Act (Amendment) Committee, the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Committee, the Equal Remuneration Review Committee etc. She runs an NGO which works for women and children to help them in economic empowerment, providing free legal aid, training and counselling.

Actor Vijay to pay penalty for BMW car from date of order for payment

A writ petition was filed by actor Vijay against the order of the Commercial Tax Department directing him to pay a penalty for non-payment of entry tax for a BMW X5 luxury car imported by him from the United States in 2005.


Vijay contended that the Commercial Tax Department had imposed entry tax amounting to Rs 7,98,075 together with penalty of Rs 30,23,609 for the delayed payment of entry tax. He challenged the imposition of penalty.
The Madras High Court while diposing the petition directed that the penalty for non payment of entry tax could be levied only from January 2019 when a division bench of the court ruled that car importers were liable to pay entry tax. The court held that the penalty had to be calculated from the date of the order till the actual payment of the entry tax and not from the day of the actual import.

The couple got married in Las Vegas in 2019. Their first child, daughter Willa was born at a Los Angeles hospital in July 2020. The name Willa as per German culture translates to ”will helmet” or ”resolute protection”.


Sophie Turner is a British actress who played Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones while Joe Jonas is a member of pop band Jonas Brothers. They began dating in 2016 and got engaged a year later. They married in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas in May 2019 after the Billboard Music Awards held that year.
