Margaret Alva is the Opposition’s vice presidential candidate

Former Union Minister Margaret Alva has been declared the Opposition’s candidate for the vice presidential election. The election is slated for the 6th of August.
Margaret Alva has been a Member of Parliament for around 30 years. She served as Union Minister for several terms under the Congress government. She is a lawyer, social worker and trade unionist. She was born on April 14, 1942 in Mangalore, Karnataka.


Margaret Alva also served as Governor of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Goa and Gujarat. She was part of some of the major committees that involved women’s rights like the Dowry Prohibition Act (Amendment) Committee, the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Committee, the Equal Remuneration Review Committee etc. She runs an NGO which works for women and children to help them in economic empowerment, providing free legal aid, training and counselling.
