Ajay Banga nominated to lead World Bank

US President Joe Biden has nominated Ajay Banga, a former chief executive officer of Mastercard Inc to lead the World Bank after David Malpass has announced that he would step down from his post.


Ajay Banga is the son of an officer in the Indian Army. He spent his childhood in India. He studied economics at Delhi University and began his career at Nestle and spent more than a decade in sales and marketing roles and then moved on to PepsiCo Inc. He later joined Citigroup Inc in 1996. He proved his mettle there and rose to lead the bank’s international consumer operations. From there, he joined Mastercard in 2009. He then joined the US Investment firm General Atlantic as vice chairman at the end of 2021.

Letter written in 1955 by King Charles to his grandmother traced

A letter dated March 15, 1955 written by King Charles III to his grandmother was traced by a couple in their attic while cleaning during the Christmas vacation. The letter written on Buckingham Palace notepaper reads ”Dear Granny, I am sorry that you are ill. I hope you will be better soon. The back of the letter has circles and colourful kisses and is signed off as ”Lots of love from Charles”.


King Charles III was six years old when he wrote that letter. It was found inside an envelope sent from Queen Elizabeth II to the Queen Mother.
Charles Hanson, the owner of Hansons Auctioneers said that the letter could fetch 10,000 pounds at auction. The letter was found in the house of late Roland Stockdale who worked for the Metropolitan Police where he was a member of the Queen’s personal protection team.

Supreme Court bench to decide hijab case

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that he will take a call to list the case relating to the ban on girls wearing hijab in government schools in Karnataka.
A batch of petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the judgement of the Karnataka High Court refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions in the state.


Earlier a two judge bench of the Supreme Court delivered a split verdict in October 2022.. Therefore the matter will be referred to a three judge bench. With examinations scheduled to begin on March 9 and girls wearing hijab not permitted to take the exams, the urgency in the matter has been brought to the notice of the apex court. It was brought to the notice of the court that some girls have even moved to private institutions because of the prohibition on wearing hijabs but they still have to take their exams in government institutions and if they are not permitted to write their exams, they will lose another year.

305 nominations received for Nobel Peace Prize this year

The Nobel Institute in Oslo has disclosed on its website that 305 nominations have been submitted for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize but did not disclose the names on the list. The list comprises 212 nominations from individuals, and 93 from organizations.


The identity of the candidates are always kept confidential. Those who are eligible to nominate include former laureates, lawmakers, cabinet ministers from any country in the world and some university professors.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was shared by Russian human rights group Memorial, Ukraine’s Centre for Civil Liberties (CCL) and jailed Belarusian rights advocate Ales Bialiatski.
Climate activists Greta Thunberg of Sweden and Vanessa Nakate of Uganda and Iranian women’s activist Masih Almejad are believed to be on this year’s list.

Start-up tech Company reminds employees to go home

SoftGrid Computers is an Indian tech start-up based in Indore in Madhya Pradesh. It has installed software that reminds employees that their shift time is over and it’s time to go home.


This company has around 40 employees and they get a daily notification to log off every day 10 minutes before their shift ends. At 7 p.m., their desktops automatically shuts down.
Shweta Shukla, CEO and founder of this start-up said that the notification was part of the company’s efforts to allow employees to enjoy a better work-life balance. The software was installed in all employee systems about six months ago.
Many people have praised this initiative after the post went viral. For those employees who have pending work and need to continue with their work, they can just restart the system and log in, says Shweta Shukla.

Vivek Ramaswamy, an Indian -American announces 2024 US Presidential bid

An Indian-American tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has announced his intention to contest the 2024 US Presidential polls. He promises to Make America Great Again and to end dependence on China.

Ramaswamy is 37 years old and is originally from Kerala. His parents migrated to the United States and worked at a General Electric plant in Ohio. He is the second Indian-American after Nikki Haley to announce that he will be running for United States President.
Ramaswamy founded Roivant Sciences in 2014 and led the largest biotech IPOs of 2015 and 2016. Besides this, he has founded healthcare and technology companies too. In 2022, he launched Strive Asset Management, a new firm that focused on restoring the voices of everyday citizens in the American economy by focusing on excellence over politics.

Singer Sonu Nigam and crew allegedly manhandled on stage

Singer Sonu Nigam and his crew were allegedly manhandled and one of his aides was pushed off the stage when fans clamoured to take selfies at a music festival in Mumbai last night. There was a live performance by Sonu Nigam at Chembur and the incident took place when Sonu Nigam was climbing down from the stage after his performance.


His aide suffered minor injuries and was discharged after receiving treatment at a hospital.
Sonu Nigam told reporters that he fell on the steps after being pushed and when his aide went to save him, he was pushed from behind. A police complaint has been lodged for wrongful restraint and causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others.
Some reports say that the attack was done by the son of an MLA. However, the police have denied that there is any political angle to this incident.

US President Joe Biden makes unannounced visit to Ukraine

US President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, Ukraine and assured President Volodymyr Zelensky of support from Washington ahead of the war’s one year anniversary. This visit comes a day before Russian President Vladimir Putin was due to make a major address to set out Russia’s aims for the second year of the war against Ukraine.


It has been reported that sirens blared across the Ukrainian capital even though there were no missiles or air strikes from Russia. It was almost a year ago that Putin invaded Ukraine. Biden praised Ukrainians for their bravery in resisting Russia’s invasion.
Biden promised $500 million worth of weaponry including artillery ammunition, anti-armour systems, air defence radars and higher sanctions on Russia. Zelensky on his part thanked Biden and said that his visit showed an important sign of support for Ukrainians.

12 new pieces of music to feature in coronation of King Charles

Twelve newly commissioned pieces of music will feature in the coronation of King Charles III at the Westminster Abbey in May this year. It includes six orchestral commissions, five choral commissions and one organ commission.
Buckingham Palace disclosed that there will be a new Coronation Anthem composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It also disclosed that King Charles had requested for Greek Orthodox music that can be traced back to the Byzantine period as a tribute to his late father Prince Philup who was born in the Greek island of Corfu.


According to the palace, fanfares will be played by the State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry and the Fanfare Trumpeters of the Royal Air Force. Music by classical composers that historically featured in the service for 400 years will include George Frideric Handel, Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry and Ralph Vaughan Williams and also feature the music of living Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.

Mukesh Ambani donates 1.51 crore to Somnath Temple

Chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani visited Somnath Mahadev temple in Gujarat on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri and offered prayers along with his son Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio. They were welcomed by PK Lahiri, Chairman of the temple trust and Secretary Yogendrabhai Desai.


Ambani later donated Rs 1.51 crore to the Somnath temple trust. Both father and son were seen praying before the deity and offering ‘Abhishek’ with folded hands and later, a priest offered sandal paste and a stole to them.
It may be recalled that last year in September, Mukesh Ambani visited Lord Venkateswara temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirumala and donated Rs 1.5 crore to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. The Ambanis are said to be deep rooted in traditions and they celebrate all Hindu festivals.

AI interviews Rishi Sunak and Bill Gates

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates were at Imperial College London to meet with Cleantech for the UK, a coalition aiming to support green technology start-ups.


At the event, both of them answered questions from an AI -powered platform and provided insights into their perspectives on technology and the future of the global economy. The AI platform made use of natural language processing algorithms to generate questions for Sunak and Gates based on their past speeches, interviews and public statements. The event marked a milestone and it showed the ability of machine learning algorithms to carry out intelligent conversations with human beings.
The AI platform had posed thought provoking questions to both of them. This video has been posted on the 10 Downing Street YouTube channel.
