Eleven women from Kerala pooled money to buy lottery ticket, win 10 crore

Eleven women from Kerala who did not even carry Rs 25 in their purse, pooled money to buy a lottery ticket worth Rs 250. One woman borrowed the meagre sum just to try her luck. These women by a stroke of luck, won a whopping sum of Rs 10 crore and were announced winners of the monsoon bumper by the Kerala lottery department.

The women who are members of Haritha Karma Sena, bought a lottery ticket for the first time. All of them are going through a lot of struggles and hardships in their lives and this money will come in handy to solve their problems.
Haritha Karma Sena is engaged in collection of non-bio-degradable waste from households and establishments and sent to shredding units for recycling. Sheeja, the chairman of the Haritha Karma Sena consortium at the Municipality said that the winners were hardworking women and sole breadwinners for their families.

Married woman from India goes to Pakistan to marry her Facebook friend

Anju, a married woman from Rajasthan travelled to Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and married her Facebook friend Nasrullah. Her father Gaya Prasad Thomas expressed his sorrow at his daughter’s action and said that she is as good as dead for the family.

Her husband Arvind Kumar said that Anju told him that she was visiting some friends in Jaipur and would be back in a couple of days. He was clueless about how she went to Lahore, how she got the visa etc.
Meanwhile the Rajasthan police have taken cognisance of the matter and are conducting a preliminary investigation.
Anju has two children whom she left behind. Her father has stated that what his daughter has done is very shameful and that the family will not have any relations with her anymore.

Young man from Karnataka swept away while recording Instagram video

Sharath Kumar, a resident of Bhadravathi Shivamogga district was recording an Instagram video near the Arasinagundi waterfall near Udupi district of Karnataka when he was swept away. An operation to locate him is underway. He was said to be standing on a rock at the edge of the waterfall when he slipped and was swept away by the force of the water. The entire tragic sequence was recorded on camera by his friend who was shooting the video.

Rescue teams are searching for Sharath Kumar but he has not been found so far. A case has been registered at Kollur police station and the man’s family has come over to Kollur.

There has been heavy rainfall, waterlogging and landslides in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts and many selfie deaths that occurred in tourist destinations across the state. Hence the state government has banned taking selfies near Gotak falls and warned of severe action on offenders.

Nation observes Kargil Vijay Diwas today

India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas today the 26 of July and remembers the sacrifice made by Indian soldiers of the Indian Army on this day. in 1999 when Indian soldiers triumphed over Pakistani troops in Kargil after more than 60 days of battle.

President Droupadi Murmu said that all countrymen will remember the victory and the valour of the country’s armed forces on ”Kargil Vijay Diwas”. The Indian Army had launched a fierce counterattack to push back Pakistani forces that had had stealthily occupied important heights in Ladakh in 1999.
The President tweeted that she pays tribute to the memory of fighters who paved the way for victory by sacrificing their lives to protect the country and that their heroism will inspire the future generations.

Around 500 women to take part in a London walkathon

In a first-of-its-kind, a saree walkathon will be held in London in which around 500 saree clad women will take part to mark National Handloom Day on August 7. This walkathon is to raise awareness about Indian handloom.

The women who are participating in this walkathon will wear sarees from different states of India and walk past historical landmarks on August 6. The walkathon will start from Trafalgar Square and proceed to Parliament Square in Westminster through 10 Downing Street.
This event is organised by the British Women in Sarees group and supported by the Inspiring Indian Women group.The British Women in Sarees group is a group of empowered women who take pride in flaunting handloom sarees. It is a non-profit organisation and organises events to promote the heritage of India, to raise awareness of the hardwork and artistry that is behind weaving sarees and to support and connect with weavers and artisans.

Obama’s personal chef drowns while paddleboarding

The personal chef of former US President Barack Obama drowned near the family’s home on Martha’s Vineyard. Massachusetts State Police recovered the body from Edgartown Great Pond on Monday and confirmed that it was Tafari Campbell.

Campbell was a talented chef at the White House and was said to be very creative and passionate about food and a warm and kind person too who had the capacity to make people’s lives brighter.  As the Obamas were leaving the White House, they asked Campbell to go with them and since then, he became a part of their family.
Campbell is survived by his wife and twin sons. He was not wearing a life jacket said a report from the police.
He visited Martha’s Vineyard and the Obama family were not present at the home at the time of the accident. They are said to be heartbroken about the loss.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to head celebrations on Income Tax Day

The country is observing the 163rd Income Tax Day or ”Aaykar Diwas” today. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will lead the celebration at the Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today.

On the 24th of July in 1860, Income Tax was introduced in India by Sir James Wilson to compensate for the losses incurred during the first war of Independence. The programme will commence at 6 p.m..
Income Tax Day is celebrated every year on the 24th of July to spread awareness about the importance of taxes and to encourage people to pay taxes to assist in the development of the nation.
A week prior to this occasion, many seminars, workshops and outreach programmes are organised by the regional offices of the tax department. This is done to promote tax payment and to convey the message that paying taxes is an ethical duty of citizens.

Delhi Congress protests against Manipur violence and Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

Man who tried to enter CM Mamata Banerjee’s house in Kolkata, arrested

A man identified as Sheikh Noor Alam tried to enter West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Harish Chatterjee Street, Kolkata has been arrested by the police. One firearm, a knife, some contraband substances and several ID cards of different agencies have been recovered from him. He travelled in a black car with a police sticker on it. He was wearing a black coat and a tie. Police have seized the car which he was driving.

The man is being questioned at a local police station in Kalighat by officers of the Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) Special Branch and a case has been registered against him under the sections of criminal conspiracy and impersonation of a public servant under the IPC and also under the Arms Act. This incident took place just hours before Mamata Banerjee left her residence to reach the Martyr’s Day rally venue in the central part of Kolkata.
The Chief Minister is a Z -category protectee and therefore, this is said to be a serious issue.

Supreme Court issues notice in Rahul Gandhi defamation case

The Supreme Court has issued notice to complainant Purnesh Modi when the matter came up before it today. The case was heard by a bench led by Justice BR Gavai. The matter was then posted for hearing on August 4.

Senior Advocate AM Singhvi who appeared for Rahul Gandhi stressed for an interim suspension of the conviction order but the court refused to grant it and said that it cannot be done before hearing the other side.
Senior Advocate Singhvi requested for an urgent hearing of the case as 111 days have gone by since Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Parliament. He stated that he already missed one session and is also missing out on the monsoon sitting of Parliament as well.
The case relates to Rahul Gandhi’s ”Modi  surname remark” in a political speech during a rally in Karnataka in the year 2019.

Virat Kohli enters ”Elite Top 5” in International cricket

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has surpassed South African player Jacques Kallis and has become the fifth-highest run scorer in International cricket history. He achieved this record during India’s second Test match against the West Indies at Port of Spain.

This also happens to be Virat’s 500th game. The elite list includes Sachin Tendulkar who has 664 international appearances, former captain MS Dhoni who represented the country 558 times and the present coach Rahul Dravid who has 509 international appearances.

Manipur violence, CJI takes suo motu cognisance of viral video

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud summoned the Attorney General R. Venkatramani and the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to convey that the apex court is disturbed by the visuals of a woman being paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur. The CJI gave time to the Central government as well as the Manipur government to take steps to punish the offenders.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the disturbing video as it is a gross violation of the constitutional and human rights.The court stressed that it wanted immediate action in the matter and directed both the Centre and the Manipur government to take immediate steps and also inform the court on what action has been taken.
The suo motu case has been posted for hearing on July 28.
