Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to head celebrations on Income Tax Day

The country is observing the 163rd Income Tax Day or ”Aaykar Diwas” today. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will lead the celebration at the Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today.

On the 24th of July in 1860, Income Tax was introduced in India by Sir James Wilson to compensate for the losses incurred during the first war of Independence. The programme will commence at 6 p.m..
Income Tax Day is celebrated every year on the 24th of July to spread awareness about the importance of taxes and to encourage people to pay taxes to assist in the development of the nation.
A week prior to this occasion, many seminars, workshops and outreach programmes are organised by the regional offices of the tax department. This is done to promote tax payment and to convey the message that paying taxes is an ethical duty of citizens.
