When the passion for something drives you to pursue it further, you know you’re on the right track. For 23-year old Adnan, his love for skateboarding developed while he was playing a skateboarding video game – Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2. Since then, there’s been no looking back. In conversation with us, he talks about his love for skateboarding, how he got into it and what the scene today is like.

A fourth year engineering student from Hyderabad, Adnan has been skate boarding for about 5 to 6 years now. His love for any form of art, especially visual got him into gaming and one thing led to another. His brother already had a board so he borrowed it and started trying to ape the tricks he saw in the game. “I was very amused by snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding games as a kid. But when I saw the bonus videos of skateboarding, it took my breath away.” It wasn’t just the tricks though, it was everything about the culture, the feel and lifestyle of skateboarding that appealed to him.
Taking inspiration from the bonus credit videos and post playing Tony Hawk, Adnan started looking at various skateboarder videos that were available online. “I got my first skateboard from Qatar and I had to assemble all the pieces together. I would take the board and try and improvise. I had to figure it out on my own because there was no support or encouragement I got from anyone”, he says.
His inspiration kept growing despite not having anyone to look up to, and he continued to learn further. He informs us, “My inspiration is the sport itself. The fact that such a form of transport even exists makes it so much cooler. But what really gets me is the humble and artistic lifestyle and culture behind it.” There are no rules or opponents or referees to control you, he says. “It’s about the feeling – you do what you feel on your board. The sense of freedom you get while you’re trying the tricks… it’s elating and gives me an adrenaline rush!”
Once he got serious about skateboarding he went out looking for other skateboarders but sadly, there weren’t too many, especially in Hyderabad. “The skating scene was zero when I started, now at least there are a few people who’ve started trying to skateboard and the numbers are definitely increasing,” avers the young skateboarder. He took to social media to reach out to other boarders where he got in touch with foreigners who skateboard from around the world. On his page he posts pictures and videos of the workshops he hosts to promote the skateboarding movement. “I post schedules of skateboarding sessions too on the page and anyone is welcome to come and try it out. There’s no restriction of race, or age and that’s what’s beautiful about this sport.”
The downside, however, to a sport like this is that there’s no skate park in Hyderabad. So where does one go to practice skateboarding? “A lot of malls, because the steps and the railings come in handy for tricks, but the few of us tend to practice post midnight when it’s less problematic. Right now we skateboard at this abandoned railway station in Lakdikapul,” he elaborates.
So how does one help better the scene? “The few of us who are here, are trying to reach out to other people and make them aware of what skateboarding is and encourage those who want to try it out. There’s our Facebook page and other social media accounts where we post what’s happening.” They’ve also started conducting free workshops and teach people how to skate in colleges or at any sports event. Adnan’s contribution to the sport is just spreading the awareness of its existence and he hopes that one day, he can open a skate park of his own so people can enjoy skateboarding just as much as he does.

She sails for her country and after pursuing a degree in medicine, amidst competitive sailing, is now a qualified doctor. What started out as a leisure activity transformed into a passion for Rohini Rau, the first Indian woman sailor to be ranked on international charts. A gold at the Laser Coastal Nationals in 2010, another at the Laser Radial National Championships in the same year, a bronze at the City of Perth Regatta in 2011 and a silver at the Tel Aviv National Regatta in 2012 are some of her more memorable wins and have made her a force to reckon with in the sport.

Rohini Rau began her sailing career way back in 2003. She started competing at the age of 11 and noticed, but wasn’t deterred by the fact, that sometimes she was the only girl sailing against men. In fact she found it quite amusing when most of the army and navy sailors would get angry when she beat them.
Today Rohini is a formidable figure in the nautical world and has won 14 gold medals and 5 silvers in national championships, along with two golds that she clinched at the Asian Games. In a career that spans more than 12 years, she has represented the country at eight world championships, along with several other international races.
Rohini says, “I believe I had already started sailing when I was in the womb! That’s what I have been told,” she jokes and adds that when she was hardly a year old her mom took her sailing for the first time. “I always loved the water when I was growing up,” she adds with a grin. Having studied in Portsmouth, UK, her mother was the one in the family who knew what sailing was. So when she came to Chennai, she joined the Royal Madras Yacht Club and used to sail for fun and that’s where it all started.
She started sailing on her own when she was about 10 years old, when she joined a summer sailing camp that was held at the club. She describes her first impression,“I loved the water and was a total tomboy growing up, so I loved the sense of adventure. I was one of the few girls who were sailing at the time. I was given my own boat and the sense of freedom and independence you get from being out on the water by yourself making your own decisions really excited me at such a young age when you are usually told what to do all the time.”
Since then, it has been a tough journey, she says. There were things she didn’t realise while she was a child, but definitely felt as an adult. “Early on, I wasn’t sent for championships abroad as the Federation felt I had enough competition in India among the men. So unless I defeated the men, they weren’t going to send me for any event.” Her hopes and aspirations took shape soon enough when she won the gold medal at the Asian Sailing Championship with team mate Pallavi Naik, from Goa, in 2004.
Her determination to pursue the sport often fetched her scorn and sometimes even ridicule. “I decided to pursue medicine in 2004. Most of my critics thought I would quit the sport now that I had chosen to study. They didn’t realise how dogged I could be,” she tells with pride. Rohini has taken 10 years to complete a 5 and a half year medical degree. “My choices were tough, but I chose to stick it out and go the distance. And for that I only have my family, especially my parents, who have supported me and sacrificed so much so I could continue pursuing my passion,” she says.
She’s voluntarily taken a break from the sport for the last two years. She says, ”As much as it hurts not being there, I am glad I finally finished my MBBS degree. I might make a comeback this year, it’s too late for the 2016 Olympics now, but may be the next Asian Games. I am also looking forward to starting work at a private hospital

Parkour, or free running as it is colloquially known, is a form of improvised outdoor gymnastics. Using no equipment other than good athletic shoes and a healthy dose of nerve, practitioners (who are also called traceurs due to the French origin of the sport) vault over walls, scale buildings and hurl themselves across structures with accuracy and efficiency. Chetan D’souza of Chaos Faktory in Bengaluru, the city’s only parkour training centre, and a free runner himself is one such exhilarating acrobat.

Watching Chetan D’souza and his team of parkour enthusiasts in action is like watching acrobatic ballet. Traceurs jump from buildings as high as two storeys, swing on ropes, scale walls and perform other such daring moves. Spread mainly through videos on the Internet, the parkour movement, which originated in France by actor David Bell who invented the sport, has been widely embraced in Europe and United States. And there’s a few enthusiastic Indians now who have dared to risk it all and take to Parkour.
Chetan has been practicing parkour for a while now. A fitness enthusiast, he began learning karate and is a black belt, third dan in this martial art. “I wanted to learn gymnastics, just to make my body more flexible and was looking around for options,” says the 28-year-old who works at Accenture. He stumbled upon some parkour videos and was mesmerised by the agility and flexibility of movement. “I knew I wanted to try it as soon as I saw the videos.” It was a lot of trial and error at first, wrong movements, injuries and a lot of aches and pains. But his enthusiasm to master the sport was insurmountable, as was his determination and motivation to learn everything he could about it.
A few of his friends joined him on his parkour learning drive and before Chetan knew it, they were having fun, staying fit and had begun a kind of fitness revolution among a group of like-minded people. “Most practitioners in India learn through free online tutorials and have been practising by themselves before they assembled in groups. The action-packed film District 13 by David Belle has achieved cult status among parkour followers. Lots of people want to learn this art but they lack opportunity, knowledge, skill and the required body fitness. Today, Chaos Faktory is a hot destination in the city. Chetan and his teammates, all trained parkour professionals, coach other enthusiasts, but also work with stunt directors from films and for advertisements. Their training centre in Vijaynagar, attracted the attention of some investors and Chaos Faktory, located at the FITT Club is now a full fledged academy that not only trains, but also works hard to promote the sport.
“Taking this into consideration, Chaos Faktory organised Bengaluru’s first ever Parkour-Freerunning Jam where around 50 participants gathered to learn and gain knowledge on the art they have always wished to learn,” tells Chetan, taking great pride in the fact that he is one of the first promoters of this sport in South India. The team has worked for brands such as Puma, Pepsi, IGate, Purvankara Builders, Wildcraft, TCS-10k marathon and Chennaiyin FC, performing stunts for their ad campaigns. They made their sandalwood debut performance in Kichcha Sudeep’s movie Ranna.

A true example of the saying “impossible is nothing” is fitness trainer Kiran Dembla. She’s been a celebrity trainer for years now but how she got there is a story unlike others. Kiran has a masters’ degree in Indian vocal music and was first a house wife and a mother of two. The urge to do more instead of just sitting at home got to her so much that she started over-thinking and ended up putting on weight. She tried her hand at yoga and swimming but couldn’t continue due to her fear of drowning. A self-motivated lady she decided to conquer her fears and took to swimming once again. Soon, she decided to join the gym where her curiosity grew fast and she finally did a course in fitness and personal training. Kiran went on to train herself and finally opened her own gym. There’s been no looking back since then.

This amazingly motivated lady took it upon herself to get an amazing new body so she could attend the World Body Building Championship and she conquered that too! Kiran Dembla was awarded the 6th place.

The team of ABCD 2 were in Bangalore to promote their film before its all-India release. Actors Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor were happy to entertain those present at the event by shaking a leg with Rubber Man and director of the film Prabhu Deva.

The story traces the journey of an Indian dance troupe, a motley assortment of boys and girls who come from the backstreets of a Mumbai suburb; their rise to fame, sudden downfall and then their heroic attempt to seek vindication by regaining their lost glory and pride.

It was a bit of a shock (in a good way, if you please) to see 28 year old Anupriya Goenka star in Myntra’s latest ad campaign for their in-house brand Anouk, featuring a lesbian couple. Along with Neha Panda, Anupriya, who has starred in Telugu films Potugadu and Paathshala, says she’s always been a supporter of the LGBT issue and adds that she’s been super happy with the response to the add that just goes to prove that today’s Indian youth are pro-homosexuality.
The ad shows Anupriya playing a South Indian girl, speaking to her parents in Tamil and guiding them to her home to meet her partner for the first time.
