Supreme Court has upheld the life imprisonment awarded to Rajagopal the Proprietor of of Saravana Bhavan Group of hotels for murdering his employee 18 years back. The 3 judge bench comprised of Justices NV Ramana, Mohan M Shantanagoudar and Indira Banerjee.. The Supreme Court upheld the Madras High Court judgement which had enhanced the sentence to life imprisonment from the 10 year sentence awarded by the Trial Court.
The accused has been granted time till July 7th to surrender to the trial court and serve the sentence The accused is currently on bail. While dismissing the appeal filed by Rajagopal and others the bench noted that the motive for commission of the offence was to enable the accused to marry Jeevajyoti, the wife of the deceased Shantakumar.
