Activists concerned over proposal of TN govt to put up ‘pen’ statue at sea

0

The Tamil Nadu government is considering a proposal to build a ”pen” statue at sea to honour the late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. The Public Works Department has approved of the building of the statue.

However, environmental activists have raised concerns that this project would drastically damage the coastal ecosystem of Chennai in the years to come.
The plan is to put up a 134 feet statue to be built 360 metres inside the sea and to be connected by a bridge from Karunanidhi memorial.
Puvulagin Nanbargal, an NGO that takes up the cause of the environment, has stated that CRZ IV (A) only permits construction of memorials in exceptional cases and that the pen statue does not come under this exception. Activist Nityanand Jayaram stated that if the statue is built, it would destroy the Chennai coast by a thousand cuts. He felt that if at all, a pen statue must be built, it can be built on land.

Grand Chennai by GRT presents ‘Hitch a Ride on NH44’

0

Take a gastronomic journey through the length of breadth of our diverse nation with NH44 — the latest menu by J. Hind at Grand Chennai by GRT Hotels.

Our chef was on a soul-searching journey across India. Starting right at the top, he decided to get in his car and experience life on the road. However, fate had a different plan for him when his car broke down. He hailed down a colourful truck that was passing by and asked for a lift.

Back on the road again, our chef soon grew hungry, and asked the truck’s driver to stop at a good restaurant. Laughing off his suggestion, the truck driver told him not to worry, and that he would show our chef the best roadside eateries along the way.

What followed next was a journey like no other. From the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir to the quiet, coastal life of Kanyakumari — our chef tasted it all! And what better way to experience the culture of a place than its local cuisine?

Inspired by this magical journey, our chef bid adieu to his trucker friends, thanking them for the rich experience. He returned home brimming with ideas, and thus, NH44 was born!

This specially curated degustation menu has local delicacies that have been given a modern touch through molecular gastronomy, nitrogen freezing, blowtorch roasting and other state-of-the-art techniques.

Start your flavourful journey with the famous Kashmiri Yakhni Shorba or a hot bowl of Himalayan Thentuk. Bite into Kadagu Yera (a South Indian Prawn dish) or Reshmi Kebab from the land of the Mughals to get you ready for the main course. Pair rich curries such as Manpaanai Kozhi Thokku (Kanyakumari-style chicken curry) and Lyodur Taschaman (Kashmiri cottage cheese gravy) with steaming hot rice or a variety of breads. Persian Cuisine

It helps to approach Persian (Iranian) cooking without our habitual taste expectations. As the silk road came and went and enormous empires rose and fell, Persian cuisine adapted to its neighbors and also influenced the world with the gift of food like pomegranates to name a few.

Iran, being situated among the culinary powerhouse of the Mediterranean, Middle East, and South Asia, it is no wonder that there is a broad spectrum of flavors and staples in Iran today.

Main dishes are often rice or bread with meat, vegetables, beans, nuts, and fruits. The dishes are mostly aromatic and use Flowers (rose), Herbs (dill, parsley, cilantro), Spices (saffron, cardamom, cinnamon), Fruits (dried plum, apricot, raisins) and Nuts (walnuts, pistachio, badam). Iranian kababs are particularly succulent and tender and come in several varieties.

TREASURE TROVE OF PUNCHLINES FROM A ‘REFIRED’ COP
By Sanjay Pinto

0

“Aqua Thermal Treatment of Ceramics under a constrained environment.” Do you know what that means? It’s washing dishes! Dr.Prateep Philip, IPS, retired but “refired”, does not do a Shashi Tharoor on his readers by necessitating a dictionary. What you need is actually a simple thinking cap. The 3333 quotable quotes spread over 33 chapters, on pretty much every aspect of life, are quite something.

Title: Fillipisms

3333 Maxims To Maximize Your Life

Publisher: ATC Publishers

Price: Rs.599

As a public speaker, ‘Fillipisms’ is an integral part of my toolkit (although that’s a dangerous word today!) A friend for close 25 years, I have always considered the author to be a wordsmith, worthy of being nicknamed ‘Quote Marshall’! The title itself is a clever play on his surname, replete with his signature personal touch and a one-word blurb of the work inside, with the USP – to give your life a fillip.

A Queen’s Award winning police officer and a deeply spiritual man, Prateep draws his inspiration from the Holy Bible. And the 1330 couplets in the ‘Thirukural’ gave him an idea to compile this treasure trove of punchlines. The work can vie with international bestsellers like ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ and ‘You Can Win’. Splashed on the cover is an encomium from renowned author Brian Tracy himself, who swears that “this book will jolt you out of inertia.”

Reading is believing. Here are some samples:

“Genius is 1% intuition and 99% tuition.”

“Don’t run the race of life in such a way to end up on the podium of odium.”

“Keep your ears to the ground or else you will have your nose on the ground.” (perhaps, gleaned from his stints as a senior intelligence officer?!)

“Slow & steady wins the ‘raise.’

“You have a choice to be a nerd or to join the herd.”

“Each of us has a choice to be either a mess or a message.”

“Pause is the secret of poise.”

The template monotony of government communication may have bottled up the creative juices of this former Director General of Police. Imagine fillipisms on file notings!

Prateep Philip, IPS Retd

Knowing Prateep and his insatiable appetite for creative expression, he is not the sort to rest on his laurels. Fillipisms are still a work in progress, judging by the quotidian fresh dose he shares on the social media. A new edition seems just on the anvil.

Post retirement, Prateep has a big list of books in the pipeline. Meanwhile, he is setting podiums ablaze as a motivational speaker. No prizes for guessing what his own reference book would be!
