Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 44th Chess Olympiad at the Jawaharlal Stadium in Chennai today. Actually, this prestigious event was scheduled to be held in Russia but was shifted to Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The mascot for the event is Thambi- a horse clad in a white shirt and white veshti. Yesterday, Grandmaster and 5 time world champion Vishwanathan Anand carried the Olympiad torch from Presidency College to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Security has been beefed up and a five-tier security system has been put in place for the Prime Minister’s visit. Over 22,000 police personnel have been deployed for security purposes.
Today has been declared a holiday for Chennai, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts.
