Olivia Newton John dies at 73

Singer Olivia Newton John passed away peacefully at her ranch in Southern California at the age of 73. She battled cancer for 30 long years and finally succumbed to it. She was surrounded by family and friends in her ranch.


Olivia had won the Grammy Award several times in her career spanning over 5 decades. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and she dedicated a lot of time and money to charity. The British born and Australian raised star had dedicated a number of albums and concerts to raise funds for research and early detection of cancer. She even constructed a health centre in Melbourne that was named after her.
She was best known for her role in the 1978 musical ”Grease” opposite John Travolta. Grease remained the highest grossing musical for 3 decades.

Smallest rocket launched by ISRO carries satellite built by students

To mark the 75th year of Indian Independence, the Indian Space Research Organization launched its smallest rocket carrying an earth observation satellite as well as a satellite built by 750 school girls from the spaceport at Sriharikota yesterday.


The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) will be used to deploy satellites in low earth orbit. It is 34 m tall and about 10 m less than the PSLV. Its diameter is 2 metres compared to the 2.8 metres diameter of the PSLV.
.The SSLV has a lift-off mass of 120 tonne while the PSLV has 320 tonnes that can carry payloads upto 1,800 kgs.
It may be noted that the country’s first Satellite Launch Vehicle-3 launched in 1980 carried payloads of upto 40 kgs.

GM Viswanathan Anand elected as deputy president of FIDE

Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, five time world champion from India has been elected as the deputy president of FIDE, the sport’s world governing body. The existing president Arkady Dvorkovich has been elected for a second term.

Dvorkovich received 157 votes while his opponent Andrii Baryshpolets managed to poll only 16 votes. Elections to the world chess body was held during the FIDE Congress that is being conducted in Chennai alongside the 44th Chess Olympiad.
Anand has cut down on playing in tournaments and is focussing on coaching. He is now mentoring the Indian squad for the Chess Olympiad.
FIDE President Arkady said that he is proud to have Anand on board as he is a great person with a great personality and a long-time friend too.

The 2022 Vice-Presidential election is going on today in the country. Two candidates who are contesting are former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar who is 71 years old and is the National Democratic Alliance nominee. The other candidate is Margaret Alva who is 80 years old and the Opposition candidate.

Polling began at 10 a.m. today and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first few to cast his vote. Polling will continue till 5 p.m. today after which counting of ballots will take place.
The tenure of the current Vice President M.Venkaiah Naidu will end on August 10. All Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are entitled to vote.

Mango cultivator names mangoes after public personalities

Haji Kalimullah Khan is a 82 year old famous mango cultivator from Uttar Pradesh. He has grown more than 300 unique varieties of mangoes like Mulayam Aam, Na Mo Aam, Sachin Aam, Kalam Aam, Amitabh Aam, Aishwarya Aam etc.


He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2008 for his contribution to the field of horticulture. He usually gives the names of public personalities for the mangoes that he cultivates.
He has christened the new varieties Sushmitha Aam and Amit Shah Aam. Both these varieties were developed and cultivated in his orchard in Malihabad, Uttar Pradesh. He puts in a lot of effort in cultivating new varieties and makes sure that these mangoes are available to all.

Pope Francis names Strappetti as his personal healthcare aide

Holy Father, Pope Francis has named a Vatican nurse who had saved his life to become his personal healthcare aide due to his recent health problems. Massimilano Strappetti, nurse coordinator of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene has been nominated to the post.


The 85 year old Pope has been always attended to by healthcare staff both in the Vatican as well as his overseas trips but this position is new and is linked to his recent health problems, said a Vatican source. The Pope also has knee pain and is forced to cancel many events. After his recent trip to Canada, the Pope admitted that he should slow down or even start thinking about retiring.
Strappetti persuaded the Pope last year to undergo surgery for an inflammation in the intestine and he therefore saved the Pope’s life. He has 30 years experience as a nurse.

Thambi- the mascot of Chess Olympiad

A brown knight wearing a white shirt and a white veshti is the mascot of the ongoing Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Gigantic statues of Thambi got the attention of people including the players from abroad who have come to participate in the Olympiad.


Statues of Thambi are placed at important locations in the city. Aadland Thiagarajan, a sculptor and art director and his son Tinu Balaji have created these pieces. They had only 15 days to create the structures but around 60 artists worked round the clock to complete the work. 24 statues of Thambi were made and placed at important areas like Marina Beach, Airport, Ripon Building etc. Many people, especially kids were found clicking selfies with the statues.

Congress MPs walk out of the Rajya Sabha

Kharge objected saying if he does not bring up the issue in the House, where else should he speak. Tamil Nadu CM Stalin said that second airport will come up in Parandur

Chennai will get a new greenfield airport at Parandur at an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore. The existing airport at Meenambakkam and the new airport at Parandur will function simultaneously according to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin.


The new airport will have terminals that can handle 10 crore passengers a year, two runways, taxiways, cargo etc. The site clearance will be submitted to the Ministry of Aviation. After getting approval, the State will start preparing for land acquisition as well as preparation of a detailed project report.
The proposed airport is 57 kms away from the current airport.. A week ago, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia held a meeting with Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu regarding the location for the second airport. The other proposed location was Pannur.

RuchIra Kamboj takes charge as India’s first woman envoy to the UN

Ruchira Kamboj, 58 years of age is a 1987 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer. She was the topper of the foreign service batch that year. She was earlier appointed as the Ambassador of India to Bhutan. She is now appointed as India’s permanent representative to the United States in New York, succeeding Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti. She presented her credentials to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as she took charge of her position.


She will become the first woman from India to be given this honour. She earlier served as a Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York from 2002 to 2005. She began her diplomatic journey in Paris where she was posted as the Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy in France from 1989 to 1991.
