RuchIra Kamboj takes charge as India’s first woman envoy to the UN

Ruchira Kamboj, 58 years of age is a 1987 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer. She was the topper of the foreign service batch that year. She was earlier appointed as the Ambassador of India to Bhutan. She is now appointed as India’s permanent representative to the United States in New York, succeeding Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti. She presented her credentials to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres as she took charge of her position.


She will become the first woman from India to be given this honour. She earlier served as a Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York from 2002 to 2005. She began her diplomatic journey in Paris where she was posted as the Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy in France from 1989 to 1991.
