Russian woman cosmonaut ready to fly to space station

Anna Kikina,the only active female cosmonaut from Russia is ready for her upcoming flight to the International Space Station aboard Space X’s Crew Dragon. The flight is scheduled for October 3rd and will go ahead despite the tension between Moscow and Washington over the Russian attack on Ukraine


Kikina who is 37 years of age and an engineer, will be the fifth professional woman cosmonaut from Russia to fly to space. She will be the first Russian to travel aboard a Crew Dragon spacecraft as part of a cross-flights deal between NASA and Russia’s space agency Roscosmos.
. Kikina will be joined by Japan’s Koichi Wakata and NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada. The first Russian woman to fly to space was Valentina Tereshkova who travelled into orbit in 1963.

Today marks Mother Teresa’s 112th birth anniversary

Mother Teresa was declared a saint in the year 2016. Today, the 26th of August is her 112th birth anniversary. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
She was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu Skopje in Macedonia on August 26th, 1910. She received the call of God at the early age of 12 and decided to become a missionary. She left her parental home in 1928 and joined an Irish community of nuns called Sisters of Loreto that had missions in India.


She was sent to India where she taught in a school in Kolkata from 1931 to 1948 and came across poverty stricken people. She was moved by their plight and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, an organization that works for the poor irrespective of class, creed or colour.
She received recognition for her work across the globe and received various awards. She was canonised as a saint by the Pope at a ceremony in the Vatican in 2016.

CJI Justice Ramana’s last day in office

The Supreme Court will live stream proceedings today to mark outgoing Chief Justice of India Justice Ramana’s last day in office. A notice was uploaded on the Supreme Court website early this morning saying that the proceedings of the Hon’ble Chief Justice’s Court would be live streamed through the NIC website portal.


CJI Ramana will be sharing the ceremonial bench with CJI Designate Justice UU Lalit and Justice Hima Kohli. The bench is expected to take up ten matters for hearing.
It is not clear if live streaming will be done on a regular basis or only for a few select matters before a few select benches. Detailed guidelines in the matter are expected shortly.

BJP leader Sonali Phogat’s family give consent for autopsy

Sonali Phogat, a BJP leader from Hisar in Haryana was found dead two days ago in Goa in suspicious circumstances. She was 42. Her family claimed that she was murdered by two of her associates and that she complained about them before her death.


Her family has now given their consent to conduct the autopsy with a condition that the entire procedure is video-graphed.
The Goa Police have stated that an FIR would be filed after the postmortem is conducted. According to the police, Sonali died of a suspected heart attack but later registered a case of unnatural death.
Goa Medical College and Hospital has formed a panel of two forensic experts to conduct the forensic exam as well as a panel of two doctors to conduct an autopsy.

Australian woman arrested as per her wish on her 100th birthday

Jean Bickenton from Australia nurtured a bizarre desire to get arrested. The Victoria Police fulfilled her wish and interrupted her 100th birthday party to detain her. They put mock handcuffs on her and wheeled her out of Narracan Gardens Residential Aged Care.


Jean was employed as an army nurse for decades and she had a bizarre wish to get arrested even though she was a law abiding citizen. Three young constables from the Victoria police, whirled in on Jean’s 100th birthday with lights and sirens, staged a mock arrest and posted it on Facebook.
Netizens praised the Victoria police team’s gesture in the comments section as they made an elderly lady happy and had done real community policing.

Madras HC to hear AIADMK power tussle on August 25

A division bench of the Madras High Court adjourned the hearing of the AIADMK power tussle case to August 25. It is currently hearing appeals from AIADMK joint coordinator K.Palaniswami who is challenging the order of a single judge who nullified the party’s general council meeting held on July 11 and ordered status quo ante as of June 23, 2022.

This meeting picked Palaniswami as the interim general secretary and expelled his rival O Paneerselveam. A division bench comprising Justices M. Duraiswamy and Sundar Mohan posted the matter to August 25. The appeals are seeking to stay the order of the single judge as it had virtually created a deadlock in the party. The concerned advocates said that they are prepared to argue the main case itself on August 25.

Sonia Gandhi meets President Draupadi Murmu

Congress President Sonia Gandhi met the newly elected President Draupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. This visit is amidst the ongoing internal differences in the Congress party. Congress sources said that this was a courtesy visit.


This is her first visit after Murmu was elected President. Murmu is the second woman and the first tribal President of the country. The Congress did not support Murmu but backed Yashwant Sinha the joint opposition candidate

Anthony Fauci to step down in December

Married women can participate in the Miss Universe pageant from 2023

From the year 2023, marital status will not be a bar for women to participate in the Miss Universe beauty pageant. In a historic decision that has been welcomed by many, the prestigious Miss Universe pageant will allow married women to participate in the pageant from 2023.


Mothers and married women can now take part in the contest. Until now, according to the rules, the Miss Universe winners had to be single and remain single for the tenure of their title. The winners have also traditionally been expected not to become pregnant while reigning as Miss Universe.
Harnaaz Sandhu from Punjab who was crowned Miss Universe in 2021 represented India at the 70th Miss Universe pageant held in Eilat, Israel . Before Harnaaz, two other Indian women were crowned Miss Universe- Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000.

Non-bailable warrant issued against godman Nithyananda

A Sessions Court in Ramanagara near Bengaluru has issued a non-bailable warrant against controversial godman Nithyananda in a rape case of 2010. The trial of the case has begun and witnesses have been examined but the trial was stalled for 3 years due to the absence of Nithyananda. It is said that he has not responded to summons issued against him since 2019. The Non bailable warrant is returnable by September 23.


The rape case was filed against Nithyananda in 2010 based on a complaint by his former driver Lenin. Nithyananda was arrested and later released on bail. In 2020, his bail was cancelled as Nithyananda is said to have escaped from the country and established an ashram called Kaliasa which is in an unknown location.
The NBW was issued as the godman failed to make an appearance since 2019 and also did not respond to multiple summons.
