From the year 2023, marital status will not be a bar for women to participate in the Miss Universe beauty pageant. In a historic decision that has been welcomed by many, the prestigious Miss Universe pageant will allow married women to participate in the pageant from 2023.
Mothers and married women can now take part in the contest. Until now, according to the rules, the Miss Universe winners had to be single and remain single for the tenure of their title. The winners have also traditionally been expected not to become pregnant while reigning as Miss Universe.
Harnaaz Sandhu from Punjab who was crowned Miss Universe in 2021 represented India at the 70th Miss Universe pageant held in Eilat, Israel . Before Harnaaz, two other Indian women were crowned Miss Universe- Sushmita Sen in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000.
