Diplomatic Dinner for Consul Generals hosted by Peranakan Restaurant, Pandan Club

Pandan Club hosted an exclusive dinner for Consul Generals, Honorary Consuls and other Diplomats through Consular Corps Diplomatique (CCD) on 15th March 2023 at their restaurant located at Star City Hotel in Bazullah Road, T Nagar, Chennai. Given the popularity of the restaurant with diplomatic guests, the founders of India’s first Modern Peranakan restaurant hosted this event for networking.

The evening was a spectacular success with over 40 guests gracing the event. Consul Generals and Honorary Consul Generals of Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, El Salvador, Seychelles, Thailand, Spain, India, Myanmar, France, Iceland, Ireland, Bangladesh, Russia and Mongolia were in attendance.

Masterchef Sashi Cheliah and Big Bandha’s Manoj Padmanaban curated a feast of Singaporean and Asian cuisine for the diplomatic guests. “The dishes come as close as one can hope for shores as far away as Chennai. The Singapore Ice Cream Sandwich brings back a lot of memories. The feast ended with generous helpings of the Singapore Ice Cream Sandwich and the Sinfully Chocolate, which the honourable guests thoroughly enjoyed.

Reserve Bank Governor gets ‘Governor of the Year’ Award

Shaktikanta Das, the 66 year old governor of the Reserve Bank of India has been awarded the ‘Governor of the Year’ award for the year 2023 by international publication Central Banking.


This award has recognised Shaktikanta Das for captaining the financial markets through the turbulent periods of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the impact of the Ukraine war. Mr. Das is currently serving his second term as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He is an IAS officer and former secretary at the departments of revenue and economic affairs at the ministry of finance. He assumed charge as the 25th governor of the RBI on December 12, 2018.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted that it is a matter of great pride for the country that the RBI Governor has been conferred with this award. He also congratulated the Governor for being conferred with this award.

Many students absent for Class 12 board exams in TN

The Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh has informed the media that 5.6 per cent of students did not appear for the first paper of the Class 12 board exams. He further stated that discussions are being held with the officials of the Education department. Reports say that out of the 8.51 lakh students who enrolled for the public exam, 50,674 did not appear for the first exam that was held on March 13.


The board exams for class 12 students in Tamil Nadu began on March 13 with part I of the Tamil language paper. It will go on till April 3.
The students who were absent were mainly from the districts of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Thiruvannamalai. A committee will be formed to resolve this issue. The Tamil Nadu government has ordered an inquiry into this unusual absence of students for the board exams this year. The Education Minister has requested the parents to inform their children of the importance of the exams and to send them to write the exams.

Indian-American to be appointed as Assistant Secretary of US Air Force

Indian-American Ravi Chaudhary is to be appointed as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Air Force. He served earlier as a Senior Executive at the US Department of Transportation where he was Director of Advanced Programs and Innovation.


During his service in the US Air Force from 1993 to 2015, Chaudhary completed many operational, engineering and senior staff assignments. He also served as a C-17 pilot where he conducted global flight operations and numerous combat missions in Afghanistan and Iran.
Chaudhary holds a Doctorate specialising in executive leadership and Innovation from the Georgetown University D.L.S. Program, an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from St. Mary’s University, an M.A. in Operational Arts and Military Science from Air University and a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy.

DMK MP’s house and car allegedly vandalised by TN minister’s supporters

DMK Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Tiruchi Siva’s house and car were allegedly vandalised by supporters of Tamil Nadu minister KN Nehru on Wednesday.


It has been reported that the MP was not extended an invitation to an official state government function and his name was also not mentioned at a programme held in Tiruchirapalli. Due to this, his supporters were upset and are said to have shown black flags to Minister K N Nehru.
The supporters of the minister retaliated and are said to have vandalised Tiruchi Siva’s house and car. A probe has been lodged into the attack by the police based on CCTV footage. Nobody was present in the MP’s house at the time of the attack

Railways opens a Tea stall run by Transgender community

A ”Trans tea stall” has been set up at the Guwahati Railway station as part of an initiative by the Northeast Frontier Railway. This tea stall is run by the transgender community and is the first of its kind in the country.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw posted pictures of this tea stall on Twitter. It shows the newly opened tea stall decorated with garlands and few people from the transgender community standing.


Many people have praised this initiative of the Railways on social media. Industrialist Anand Mahindra re-shared the post and wrote, ”This one small initiative is, in my view, as significant and transformational as your many other progressive projects. Indian Railways carry over 8 billion people. And most important, excludes no one. Bravo Ashwini Vaishnaw.”

TN government bans kuravan-kurathi attam

The government of Tamil Nadu has banned the performance of kuravan-kurathi attam in any cultural programme as it denigrates the Kuravar community. A GO was issued from the Tourism, culture and religious endowments department dated March 10 based on the verdict of the Madras High Court on January 11.


The High Court had directed the state government to take steps that no dance performance be identified using a caste/tribal community’s name so as to insult or degrade people belonging to such communities. The High Court further directed the government not to grant permission for any cultural or dance programme that denigrates the social status of the Kuravar community and that If any complaint is received, action has to be taken against the violators.
In accordance with this judgment, a GO was passed removing the kuravan-kurathi attam from the 100 folk arts listed by the welfare board for folk artistes.

US President Joe Biden invites UK PM rishi Sunak to visit Washington

US President Joe Biden invited British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to the White House in June. This invitation came during a meeting between the two leaders in San Diego, California where they were participating in the unveiling of a nuclear submarine pact with Australia.


According to reports from the White House, both leaders discussed the importance of the two countries having a strong, enduring economic relationship. They were joined by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in unveiling their submarine-technology-sharing plans as part of the three country AUKUS alliance.
The US President has plans to visit Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday peace accord on April 10.

Three year old kid accidentally kills sister with loaded gun in the US

A three year old girl gained access to a loaded, semi automatic pistol and accidentally killed her four year old sister near Houston, Texas. According to the police, there were five adults at home, including the parents when this incident occurred.


Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonsalez said that the shooting took place late Sunday and that when family members heard the single gunshot, they rushed into the bedroom and found the four year old child unresponsive. The tragic incident appeared to be unintentional.
The Pew Research Center has disclosed that about 40 percent of US households have guns but less than half of them store them safely. Texas, which has 30 million residents, is one of the easiest places to get a gun and it can be carried in public without any restriction.

Bridegroom comes drunk for his wedding

In a bizarre case, a bridegroom named Prasenjit Haloi from Nalbari town in Assam arrived drunk at the wedding venue. He was looking dazed and was even finding it difficult to recite the rituals that the pandit was narrating.


At one stage, the groom even passed out on the floor. According to reports, around 95 per cent of the groom’s side of the family were drunk. Therefore the family of the bride contacted the Gaon Burha-the leader of the Assamese village and also alerted the police. It has been reported that the groom could not even get out of the car. Seeing this situation, the bride decided not to sit for the wedding. The family of the bride later filed a complaint in the Nalbari police station demanding compensation for the wedding.

King Charles to renovate Buckingham Palace

King Charles III is planning to renovate Buckingham Palace at a cost of 369 million pounds to make it fit for the king. The refurbishments will take 4 years time and the King will move into the Palace once the work is completed.


The King has 11 homes including official residences such as Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland, as well as private residences like Highgrove, Sandringham, Birkhall on Balmoral Estate, Dumfries House in Ayrshire and the Castle of Mey.
Queen consort Camilla has her own residence, Raymill at Lacock in Wiltshire where she spends her time entertaining family and relaxing.
King Charles has ruled out reducing the Crown’s extensive property empire and he is not in favour of opening up the royal residences to the public.
