Febraury ’14 – Reveling in the present

0

Actor, model, singer…pretty Sonal Chauhan dons many hats! And the charming young lady is refreshingly untouched by fame.  Not one to pause and give politically correct answers, and with strong views on fashion and fitness, she breaks stereotypes when it comes to attitudes towards dieting, beauty and the need to look good – all virtually matters of life and death in the industry that she is in!

_MG_5576

The lissome lass was in Hyderabad recently, shooting for the Telugu film ‘Legend’ and is waiting to head to Dubai for the last leg of shooting. ‘Legend’ is slated for release by end March/early April and Sonal is quite excited, understandably so! Talking about her experience shooting the film, she gushes, “It was fantastic. It’s been so smooth. Everyone was really nice and warm. Balakrishna (Nandamuri) was really, really helpful in spite of being a huge superstar. He was very welcoming.” And despite not knowing Telugu, she says, “It was not as difficult as I thought it would be. As I said, everyone was so helpful. They understood that it (language) is a problem for me and they went out of their way to help me. I am very grateful to them.”

sonal-redSonal comes from a conservative Rajput family and her parents were not exactly thrilled when she decided to join the film industry. Coming from a non-film background and being hurtled into the glitz and glamour of Bollywood was tough.  She recalls, “I was very young when I entered the film industry and I was very introverted. It was difficult because my family would constantly says that this is not what we wanted for our daughter, When I won the pageant (Sonal won Miss World Tourism 2005 at Miri, Sarawak, in Malaysia – the first Indian to win the title), my parents saw that I wouldn’t have to go from door to door for work, and they kind of warmed up. They were okay with it and now they are very supportive.”

Nevertheless, entering the industry came with its share of challenges. She confesses, “I was clueless; I didn’t know an actor has to do her own PR. Initially it was too much to take and I made lots of mistakes. Because I am an introvert, people thought I was arrogant. I was just a misfit – I didn’t know how to talk to people.” Today, she has evolved and matured; “Along the way, I’ve been learning – I’m still learning! I hope it gets better,” she says with a laugh.

There were rumours that Sonal had packed her bags and left Bollywood to make the South her home. However, she is very much in Mumbai. But she is open to moving south of the Vindhyas. “I don’t know if the South is going to accept me,” she says philosophically. “Let’s see. There have been some good offers.” But, she is reluctant to divulge the details, saying, “I’m very superstitious. I don’t want to jinx it.”

Recently, Sonal got rave reviews for her ramp appearance for Shantanu Goenka at Lakme Fashion Week 2013. She looked dazzlingsonal-black in a black lehenga and choli with an intricately embellished net dupatta. She has dabbled in a lot of modelling in the past few years. So, which does she prefer – acting or modelling? She laughs and replies, “That’s one thing I’ve been thinking about for the longest time.” She pauses dramatically and says, “I want to do both!”

“Walking the ramp is an adrenaline rush. There are no retakes – those 30 seconds or that one minute – it’s yours. There is no bigger high. I love doing it,” she says emphatically. “And being the showstopper – it’s my moment; it feels so special. At that moment, the ramp belongs to me and I have to make it my own.” She adds, “However, I love acting too. It’s very special to me.”

What about singing, we ask.  She sang the song ‘Kaise bataaoon’ in the film ‘3G’. She is a self-confessed music aficionado. “Right from childhood, I’ve been fond of music. I’ve never had any training though.” She recollects how, when she was in Class II or III, there were selections on for the music choir. “I stood in line and got selected,” she says happily. Her love for singing continued and followed her onto the sets, where, she laughs and says, “I used to sing on the sets; I would sing at the drop of a hat!” And that was how she got an offer to sing for music composer Mithoon. She got a call one day after she had returned from shooting asking her to come to the studio and give singing a shot. It was her first experience of stepping into a recording studio. “I had never done it,” she exclaims. “Anyway, it was a good thing. I feel it’s better not to know the technicalities; I prefer not to know too much – that way, you do it with all your heart! I loved it; singing is something that makes me very happy. I would love to pursue it. For me, it’s like meditation.” She hastens to add that she wouldn’t wish to make a career out of music. “Not at all,” she emphasises. “I don’t want to make money out of it. If someone wants me to sing, I will do it happily.”

sonal-black1This young lady is known for her stunning looks and her great body. Fitness plays an important role in her life but she is quick to point out: “I do not obsess about working out.” She believes, “It’s important to stay healthy. I realised that five-six months back when my Dad went for a surgery.” She emphasises that fitness should begin when you are young. “There can be nothing more important than health in your life.”

And unlike many models and film stars who starve themselves or go on bizarre diets, Sonal feels, “It’s important to eat healthy. Never say ‘I am going on a diet’. It takes away your charm and your face looks dull. Her advice: “Exercise – give yourself one hour a day; it’s not tough. Understand your body type. Look good, smile, be happy!”

The charming actor is a self-confessed foodie. “I eat everything; I love food,” she declares. “When I feel I’ve put on weight, I hit the gym. Working out makes me feel good. Exercise releases happy hormones, it’s been scientifically proven and it’s an instant mood enhancer for me.”  Her exercise routine is varied. “I get bored – I do a little cardio, weight training, yoga, cycling and swimming. However, I am not a good swimmer.”

Sonal has been very vocal in the past about her views on the size zero phenomenon. She has maintained that it is not important and she continues to feel the same way. “I don’t think it can be achieved without dieting. I tried it once and I hated it. I looked like a patient and my skin was so dull. It’s not attractive. We Indian women are blessed with curves. When we go abroad, people love it. We should enjoy it and celebrate it.” And amazingly for a model and actor, she doesn’t feel it’s a compliment to be told that she has lost weight. “Sometimes I check myself and if I feel I have lost weight, I hate it!” We need more role models like Sonal to bust the myths of dieting, size zero and the urge to be stick-thin at the cost of our health!

She is not obsessed with a beauty regime. “When I’m not shooting, I hate wearing makeup. It has to do with my mother. When I was a kid, and even when I was growing up, she never allowed me to wear makeup.” However, she feels it is important to say hydrated and she religiously moisturises her skin.

In terms of fashion too, Sonal has a laidback attitude. “At home, I like easy lounge clothes that I’m comfy in. Comfort comes first!” On a normal day, when she is not shooting, you will find her in a pair of denim shorts, a comfortable T-shirt and flat shoes. Despite being a model, she is not fashion conscious and doesn’t follow the latest trends. “For me, what’s important when I wear an outfit is how I feel. What a model wears on a Milan ramp may not necessarily look good on me. I have never understood the concept of fashion – someone deciding what I wear. I hate it when people say bad things (about her attire); it’s my choice.”

Fame, for her, has its charms and its challenges. Has fame changed her? “I don’t think so,” is her reply. Laughing, she says, “People around me would answer that better!” She adds, “If at all, I’m more humble – it’s more to do with growing up. I’m not someone who feels I have to be treated differently.”

What she dislikes about fame is the invasion of her privacy, and of course, the endless gossip and speculation. She muses, “Before, I could go out with friends. I was in a co-ed institution and I had a lot of male friends. Now, even if I go out for a coffee with a male friend, there is speculation. That can be embarrassing.”

But she perks up and says, “Otherwise I love it. I love that I can buy what I want. I love the attention.” Nevertheless, the attention can be a double-edged sword. Sometimes, when she is out with her friends and gets mobbed, she finds it awkward, and her friends can be uncomfortable too. “They don’t know what to do,” she says. However, she fesses up: “I like it more than I dislike it!”

This spirited young lady lives in the moment, happy to do her best in whatever she is engaged in. Her philosophy: “I don’t plan too much ahead. Whenever I plan ahead, God has other plans for me. So I let Him hold my hand and take me. I trust him.” Well, we hope God blesses you with whatever you wish for!

Style Check

Define fashion

Fashion according to me is what I feel comfortable in, something that makes me feel good about myself. My fashion is individualistic.

Name three people who have influenced the way you style, dress and carry yourself.

I would say my mother, my younger sister and my publicist Rhea.

An attire you wouldn’t be caught dead in?

I think I can wear anything

Your favourite accessory

Lately I’ve been obsessed with Rayban’s Wayfarers and Aviators.

Any fashion faux pas that you’ve committed?

Lots…but I’m not going to tell you!

Your favourite designer?

I recently worked for Shantanu Goenka, I think his clothes are beautiful

Any favourite clothes?

Instant Ice Cream

0

When two IT professionals decided to turn entrepreneurs [the city is full of IT guys getting into professions or businesses not related to their degree], they decided to combine molecular gastronomy with their passion for ice cream.

[wzslider autoplay=”true” lightbox=”true”]

So Pavan Vallap and Kishore Samala put their heads together, patented a process using liquid nitrogen to freeze ice cream instantly, and launched Mist N Creams in Hyderabad. Innovative in every way, it caters to the five senses from the moment you walk into the tiny store. The smell of waffles and biscuits baking overpowers as you walk in; the pleasing blue and white interiors plus the neatly designed counters where the ice cream is made are instantly relaxing.

Then once you choose your preferred flavour – from an extensive list of 25 options that promises to keep growing – you can watch the staff prepare the ice cream in front of you. This is an experience in itself. They first mix milk with the flavour of your choice – and there are plenty of fruit, nut and chocolate based options. This is churned in front of you behind a glass counter and then liquid nitrogen is poured into it to freeze the ice cream. This has to be the second best part about the ice cream at Mist N Cream. With the red, blue and green LED lights glowing above the churner, the steam from the liquid nitrogen takes on that colour and it is a visual delight. Once the ice cream is the right consistency, it is served inside a wafer biscuit that stays firm till the very end and you don’t have to get into a race with the wafer to see who gets most of the ice cream.

Now, the best part is of course the ice cream. Because it has not been frozen, there are no ice crystals. The machines make it extremely creamy with the churning process. Made to look very tempting with chocolate chips that are made in house, or nuts or fruits depending on your choice, the ice cream is a delight in every spoon. It doesn’t melt very fast and you can truly savour the creaminess in every spoonful. And at 200 ml a serving it is filling enough.

The store also has thick and creamy milk shakes in various flavours. Prices start from Rs 130 onwards and these are inclusive of taxes.

Interactive Cooking Demonstration at The Thai Pavilion

0

When The Thai Pavilion, India’s most love Thai restaurant decided to include a few new dishes in its menu, the chefs introduced them to the media in a unique manner. They held an interactive cookery session on Thai cuisine – conducted by Chef Benjamin Lalhmangaiha.

[wzslider autoplay=”true” lightbox=”true”]

Along with Chef Arjun Yadav, who looks after all the restaurants at the Taj Vivanta, they began by explaining the importance of some of the key ingredients used in Thai cuisine. Finger root ginger, galangal, kaffir lime, basil, peanuts, Thai chilli, butternut pumpkin, lemon grass and other flavour enhancing elements were displayed and their uses explained. The restaurant, to retain its authenticity, imports its ingredients from Thailand.

The chef demonstrated a salad, a starter, Pad Thai noodles and these were then passed around for us to taste. He also showed how the pastes were hand pounded to enhance the flavours.

All the dishes have a minimum of three basic flavours and use only hand-pounded Thai spices, the freshest of clay fish, duck, Thai vegetables and mushroom, in addition to regular meat and seafood.

Thai Pavilion offers fresh, distinct and well-seasoned soups, entrees, appetizers and desserts for a true tasteful experience of the Thai culture. Each dish is endowed with subtlety and refinement, and its presentation is enhanced by ingredients rooted in traditional Thai cuisine.

The delicious meal that followed included the restaurants signature dishes along with those that had been demonstrated.

Travelling for Art

0

indiasfirstbiennaleWe often travel to experience new cultures ,understand different aspects of life.enjoy beauty ,and see places. This often involves monuments ,museums and sometimes nature and wild life . It is ,always ,to stimulate ones being either in terms of ,the experience, the mode of relaxing or indulgence.

Over the last decade or so ,I discovered a delightful additional reason ,and this was to time my travel ,only to see real contemporary art and new ideas in art.

In addition to contemporary art,the museum world has become so dynamic with wonderful special exhibitions. Some retrospectives have been great learning lessons to discover an artists, life ,oeuvre and philosophy. Retrospectives ,in addition to the art ,also allow one to see how history and political events shape an artist career .
Many historic collections are allowing contemporary artist to intervene in displays where the old and new have a dialogue ,taking thinking, interaction and surprise elements to new heights . This has brought many old collections to life and made rather dull spaces ,come alive.

I realised that owning and hoarding art was not as much joy as seeing different forms of art from different countries not only from history but from today’s world of varied expressions.

What I actually realised was that reading layers of meaning into different minds allowed me into many interesting mind spaces. I began to see the depth of intellectual thought and the different angles of ideas. Viewing oblique ideas, twisting and turning my brain, cris crossing my right and left brain only made me want more of these contemporary art experiences.

The Mother of all contemporary international curated shows is Documenta ,held for 100 days once every five years. Often the main curator selects a broad theme and the team travels across the globe to select artists who’s works speak the focus of the idea. The exhibition consists of avant garde artists from across the globe . There is no commercial angle or sale in this event. It is about viewing ,experiencing and intellectualising the art.
It is about the thought and about being open minded to views of the changing world .

It is also a pointer to the trend in concepts to come.Documenta is held in a small town,Kassel in Germany. Kassel has no airport and you find people from all over the world making this pilgrimage to see the Art. It is set in many buildings in the centre of the town and sometimes in alternative spaces and parks to expose the mind of the viewer to different aspects n alternative thinking . It is a truly rich and rewarding experience,it opens ones mind and introduces the absolute joy of the experience of viewership .Across the world are Biannales ,which are again planned curated art events held every alternate year .One of the oldest of these Biannales is the one in  Venice. Again this is spread over the city and has now become an art pilgrimage of sorts.

Now there are several Biannales across the world with different focuses, and again they are not about buying ,but about the ” spectacle of viewing”. The focus of the theme is varied ,sometimes regional and at other times thematic.
The newest of the Biannales is at Kochi , India  . It debuted last year 12/12/12 to explore lost grounds by linking it to the lost ancient port of Muziris.  Recently I went to the Singapore  Biennale and was overjoyed to see that it was focused only on South Asia with curators from each region . It was a great idea to see so many different minds come together to explore the changing world .Art Fairs are a completely different story altogether. The focus of a fair is to show and sell.So in a fair one seeing the best of galleries showing the best of “collectable art ” only. There is very little conceptual work and very little curatorial focus.
There are fairs in many countries and fairs of many qualities . In the international context, the  most well attend fair is Art Basel held in June every year, where over a hundred odd private jets land for the preview in the little Basel airport. This is followed by Frieze in London and Fiac in Paris to name some of the better attended Fairs. In india ,the India Art  Fair  is the most prestigious fair. There are many commercial enterprises aiming to compete and set up alternative commercial concepts but unfortunately have been unable to shake the leadership of the first fair in India  .

The other added advantage to Biannales and Art Fairs is the peripheral satellite events, exhibitions and activities. It is a whole new experience that can twirl you on your toes and mind and leave you breathless and certainly in awe of all the different minds one views in these shows Sometimes they are  called connoisseurs ,at other times known as Art Junkies, these are people who travel the globe viewing / experiencing these art events and often I see the same faces in different countries . The experience and the exposure that I as an art professional has got has no doubt been immense. However I see that this is an experience ,( not necessarily  as consistent as mine though ,)that I would like to share with travellers. In a plan, one can add the experience of these special art events to enhance their trips. It ends up not only enhancing ones travel  itenary   but ones mind and life as well. Traveling for the love of art, travelling for these events  travelling to elevate ones knowledge can indeed be rewarding !

Olive Bistro launches its New Menu

0

With summer round the corner,  Chef Mayank and his team at Olive Bistro have created some new dishes using fresh ingredients and seasonal produce.

To infuse some variety, the Italian Gorgonzola cheese makes its way into the Red Wine Poached Pear Salad and the Saffron Polenta and Ratatouille Construct. The pear in the salad was so full of flavours that you wanted to savour every crumb in your mouth for as long as you could. The Slow Roasted Carrot & Dill Soup, a Greek Style Farmer’s Salad, and a delicious Cajun Spiced Cottage Cheese Sandwich are a must try for the vegetarians.

[wzslider autoplay=”true” lightbox=”true”]

For the meat and seafood lovers, the Lamb Tagine – a Moroccan tomato stew served with saffron rice pilaf — really flavourful – along with other dishes like the Seafood Pizza, the Norwegian salmon and the chicken legs are also worth trying out.

Some other new inclusions are the Wild Mushroom Mélange Stuffed Pan Seared Crepes, the Slow Braised Lamb Shank, a 12oz Rosemary flavoured lamb shank, humongous sandwiches like the Confit Beef Open Sandwich, Australian John Dory served with a Smoked Pablano chilli sauce and Pistachio

Crusted New Zealand Lamb Chops.

All these dishes can be washed down with some wines that range from Indian wines, South African Nederberg Wine Masters Reserve, Australian Cabernet Merlot and Chardonnay Semillo, Italian La Corte and Zonin at comfortable prices.

But whatever you eat, leave room in your stomach for dessert as the Saffron and Vanilla Panacotta, served with the favourite gastrique of Pink Peppercorn and Blood Oranges, and the classic Italian Tiramisu for two, with creamy velvety textures of mascarpone, will take you straight to food heaven.

A singer and a dancer

0

Her parents are the famous dancing couple from Hyderabad – Drs Raja and Radha Reddy. Exponents of kuchipudi, they have contributed in a very big way towards making this dance form popular all over India. Their daughter Bhavana Reddy, who is an established kuchipudi dancer is also a singer.

bhavana-1-reddy

Based in Los Angeles, Bhavana has released her self-produced debut EP Tangled in Emotions, in February of 2014. An extended play (EP) is a musical recording that contains more music than one single but is usually too short to qualify as a full studio album or LP.

Her EP reflects the work of prominent engineers including John Would (engineer on Fiona Apple’s 2012 Grammy-Nominated album) and Reuben Cohen, from Lurssen Mastering (Slumdog Millionaire, Game of Thrones, Snoop Dogg).

bhavana-reddy

Additionally, the EP boasts phenomenal guest musicians, including percussionist Blair Shotts (Rihanna, Drake, Adam Lambert), tablist Salar Nader (Lil’ John, Shaggy, Ustad Zakir Hussain) and violinist Ray Suen (The Killers, Flaming Lips, Childish Gambino) along with her cross-cultural band including Dennis Nilsson on drums, Kevin Lambertucci on bass to do justice to the complexities of an eastern-western blend of cultures.

On the EP’s lead single, Smells like Rain she blends a cathartic rock melody with a series of vocal acrobatics to create a song that evokes vaguely middle-eastern sounds while still sounding as though her feet are firmly planted within indie rock’s fertile soil.  Haunting string harmonies and percussive blasts combine to form the platform from which her powerful voice leaps like a diver into the swells of layered instrumentation.
