Chennai declared safe city

According to the report of the 2017 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Chennai was ranked 7th out of the 19 cities in terms of the total number of crimes under the Indian Penal Code. The city also earned the distinction of being the safest metro for women and children.
A total number of 642 cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code and the Special and Local Law categories. It ranked 15th among the 19 cities and last among the metros. A total number of 249 cases were registered in 2017 under the category of crimes against children and Chennai ranked 14th out of the 19 cities. The police force has therefore commented that Chennai was a safe city for both women and children.
