A rare surgery was performed on a 51 year old woman by doctors at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Egmore. A cancerous tumour weighing 20 kgs was removed from the patient’s uterus. The woman named Rathi from Chromepet was suffering from abdominal pain and a bulging abdomen for the past 10 years.
She neglected it and didn’t seek medical help. When she was admitted in hospital in November this year, the MRI scan revealed a cancerous growth near her uterus and very close to her ovary. There was a risk of rupture and damage to nearby organs. The doctors at IOG consulted specialist gastroenterologists and urologists and performed a 10 hour surgery to remove the cancerous mass. The patient now weighs 34 kgs but is doing well. The surgery was performed free of cost under the Chief Ministers Free Health Insurance Scheme.
