Queen Elizabeth II passes away

Queen Elizabeth II passed away yesterday in Scotland at the age of 96. Condolences are pouring in from all over the globe following the demise of the monarch.


The Queen was unwell for some time and was under medical supervision. Doctors were concerned about her health. According to sources from Buckingham Palace, members of the royal family rushed to her side when her health took a turn for the worse. The Queen suffered from ”episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.
Her coffin will be brought to London and will be kept in Westminster Hall for about four days before her funeral. Her eldest son Charles has become King Charles III and will address Britain today.
The Queen reigned for more than 70 years. She will be laid to rest besides her husband Prince Philip at King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle in Berkshire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted his tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. He stated ” I had memorable meetings with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during my UK visits in 2015 and 2018. I will never forget her warmth and kindness.”

He stated that during one of the meetings, the Queen showed him the handkerchief that Mahatma Gandhi had gifted her for her wedding. with Prince Philip in November 1947. It is said that Gandhi himself spun the yarn and it was Lord Mountbatten, who was the Governor General at that time, who carried the handkerchief with him to England to hand it to the Queen. The handkerchief was a handwoven cotton lace which had the motif ”Jai Hind” woven on it. PM Modi was invited for an audience with the Queen during his visit in 2018.
Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years and has become the longest serving British monarch, surpassing her great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

Angelina Jolie sues Brad Pitt for $250 million

Angelina Jolie has filed a case against her ex-husband for $250 million. This case comes close on the heels of her victory in the French winery battle.


They bought the 1,300 acre French winery named Chateau Miraval winery together in 2008 for a huge sum of $28.3 million and further spent a huge amount to improve it. Each of them had a 50% share in it. After they got married, they spent many family holidays in the vineyard and home Chateau Miraval. It is said to have swimming pools and a helicopter pad as well. They had agreed not to sell their interests in the winery. Angelina however sold her part of the vineyard and Brad sued her for it.
Angelina filed for divorce from Brad in 2016. They met in 2003 during the film Mr and Mrs. Smith. Their divorce proceedings lasted for years. The custody dispute over their children is still pending.

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama unveiled their own portraits in the White House yesterday. The paintings will hang alongside the other previous first couples of the White House.

Loud cheers greeted them as they pulled up the blue cloths covering the paintings. Obama was painted by Robert McCurdy looking straight out, with his hands in the pockets of his dark suit against a contrasting white background. Michelle was painted by Sharon Sprung. She was shown sitting on a red sofa wearing a light blue gown.
Past presidents and first ladies have typically had their portraits hung in White House halls after ceremonies hosted by successors. As Trump refused to invite the Obamas, the current President Joe Biden invited them to unveil their portraits.

Indian origin Suella Braverman is UK’s new home secretary

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has appointed Suella Braverman, a barrister of Indian origin as the new home secretary of the UK. She will replace Priti Patel also of Indian origin.
Suella is the daughter of a Hindu Tamil mother Uma and a Goan father Christie Fernandes. Her mother migrated to the UK from Mauritius and her father migrated from Kenya in the 1960’s


.Suella served as the attorney general in the Boris Johnson led government. She was elected as the Conservative MP for Fareham in May 2015. She was also one of the contenders to replace Boris Johnson but after she was knocked out in the second round, she backed Liz Truss and has now been rewarded with one of the highest offices in the UK government. She married Rael Braverman in 2018.

Cyrus Mistry cremated in Mumbai

Former Tata Sons Chairman, Cyrus Mistry, 54 was cremated in Mumbai yesterday. The last rites were performed as per Hindu customs in an electric crematorium in Worli in central Mumbai. His body was decorated with white flowers and kept at the Worli Crematorium


He died in a road accident on Sunday afternoon while returning from a visit to Udvada in south Gujarat which is said to be a holy place for people of the Zoroastrian faith. Members of the Parsi community, business leaders. politicians, friends, relatives and well wishers turned up to pay their last respects.
Gynaecologist Anahita who was driving the car and her husband Darius Pandole were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment in hospital.
The Mercedes Benz in which Cyrus Mistry was travelling hit a divider on a bridge over the Surya river in Palghar district.

Liz Truss to be sworn in as the next UK Prime Minister

Liz Truss will be sworn in as the next Prime Minister of the UK. She defeated Rishi Sunak in the Conservative leadership contest. She will be the third woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.


Liz Truss defeated Rishi Sunak with 81,326 votes to 60,399 votes among party members. According to reports, Rishi may not be offered a post in the Cabinet. This is seen to be a break from the usual tradition where unsuccessful leadership contenders have been offered posts. For the first time in the history of the UK, there is not likely to be a white man in one of the four great offices of state.
Liz Truss will meet Queen Elizabeth at her Balmoral Castle today and will be formally appointed by the Queen as the next Prime Minister.

Netaji’s daughter to miss unveiling of her father’s statue

Anita Bose Pfaff, daughter of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose will miss the unveiling of her father’s statue at India Gate by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. She stated that though she received the invitation to attend the unveiling of the statue, the short notice made it difficult for her to travel from Germany where she currently resides.


The statue is being unveiled at India Gate under a canopy where the image of King George V, stood earlier. She stated that she would like to meet Prime Minister Modi to discuss the return of her father’s remains kept in an urn at Renkoji in Japan.
She further stated that a DNA test could be conducted to clarify doubts but was not sure if DNA could be extracted from the remains despite scientific advances.
Bose is said to have died in a plane crash in August 1945 in Taipei.

Industrialist Cyrus Mistry killed in road accident

Former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry was travelling in a Mercedes car when the car hit a road divider in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. He was travelling from Gujarat to Mumbai with three others- Anahita Pandole, Darius Pandole and Jahangir Pandole when the accident took place.


Anahita Pandole and her husband Darius survived the crash while Cyrus Mistry and Jahangir Pandole were killed. It was Anahita who was driving the car when the accident took place at around 3 p.m. on Sunday. The accident took place on the bridge over the Surya river. Anahita was over speeding and tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side when the accident occured. The injured Anahita and her husband have been shifted to Gujarat for treatment.
Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister and home minister Devendra Fadnavis have asked the police to conduct an investigation.

Senior CPI (M) leader rejects Magsaysay Award

Senior CPI (M) leader and former Kerala health minister K.K. Shailaja has declined to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award. She thanked the organizers and politely refused the award.


She told reporters in Kerala that she took this decision after consulting the party’s national leadership. According to her, she was named for the award for the work done by collective effort and she did not feel it was proper for her to receive it in her individual capacity. Moreover, the award was in the name of Ramon Magsaysay who had the history of brutal oppression of the communists in the Philippines.
The award was being given for the manner in which public health issues have been managed in Kerala.

Sachin Tendulkar joins Twitter’s one word trend

The ‘one word tweet’ has been trending on Twitter and has even got the office of the US President Joe Biden to join in. This trend is said to have been started by an American train service provider Amtraks social media team. Amtrak’s Twitter handle posted a tweet that read ”trains”.


Just a few hours after this post by Amtrak, there were more than 20,000 retweets and nearly 1,30,000 likes. Folloing suit was the Twitter handle of the President of the United States that tweeted ”democracy”. NASA then tweeted ”universe”. The American radio organization NPR, wrote ”radio”. Later The Washington Post tweeted ”news”.
Some netizens feel that the original tweet was a mistake made by an intern at Amtrak’s social media team while others believe that it was a deliberate strategy to garner attention. Sachin Tendulkar too joined the bandwagon by tweeting ”cricket”.
