Biden plans to celebrate Diwali at the White House

US President Joe Biden has plans to celebrate Diwali at the White House this year like he did last year as he is of the opinion that the festival is very important. This information was conveyed by the White House Press Secretary Karen Jean-Pierre. She stated that the event is important as Biden considers partnership with India and the Indian Americans is important. However, no dates and nature of the celebration have been shared.


The month of October has been declared as Hindu Heritage Month by the Maryland Governor Lawrence Hogan. In fact Diwali has been celebrated at the White House every year since the Bush administration.

Indian origin doctor nominated to WHO Executive Board

Dr. Vivek Murthy has been nominated as US Surgeon by US President Joe Biden to serve as the country’s representative on the executive board of the World Health Organization.


Dr. Murthy. is of Indian origin who previously served as the 19th Surgeon General under former President Barack Obama. His mission is to help lay the foundation for a healthier country by relying on the best scientific information available, to address a number of critical public health issues including the growing proliferation of health misinformation.

Actress Priyanka Chopra was invited by the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership Forum to interview US Vice President Kamala Harris. During the conference which had full of Democrats from across the country, Priyanka proudly stated that both she and Kamala Harris were daughters of India.


While Kamala Harris is an American born daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother, Priyanka is an Indian born to two physicians and a recent immigrant to the US.
Priyanka spoke about equality of pay and on the issue of marriage equality. She stated that after working for more than 20 years, only now she is getting paid equal to her male counterparts.
Kamala Harris fully agreed that they are living in an unsettled world and that the things people took for granted are now up for debate.

Donald Trump sues CNN for defamation

Former US President Donald Trump has sued CNN and accused the news network of defamation. He is seeking punitive damages of $475 million.


Trump has filed the lawsuit in a US District Court in Florida and accused CNN of waging a campaign of libel and slander against him out of fear that he will run for President again in 2024. According to Trump, CNN has tried to defame him in the minds of its readers and viewers to defeat him politically. He has stated this in his 29 page complaint. He has requested for a jury trial.
Trump had a caustic relationship[ not only with CNN but also with other major news when he was President and he branded their news as ”fake”.

Aishwarya watches Ponniyin Selvan with Aaradhya and team in Chennai

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan came down to Chennai with her daughter to watch the special screening of her film Ponniyin Selvan with director Mani Ratnam and team comprising Karthi, Trisha, Vikram and Jayam Ravi.


The film was released in theatres worldwide in multiple languages on September 30th and is reported to be taking the box office by storm. The film collected Rs 230 crores worldwide in just 3 days.
Aishwarya and her daughter were seen having a gala time at the special screening of the film. Ponniyin Selvan is based on a popular Tamil novel of the same name written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. It has Vikram, Aishwarya, Trisha, Jayam Ravi and Karthi in lead roles. It is being made in 2 parts. The second part will be released in another 6 to 9 months. President, Vice President and PM pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary

President Droupadi Murmu and the Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar paid tributes to the Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi and also to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversary on Sunday, October 2.


They visited Rajghat, the final resting place of Gandhi and also Vijay Ghat, the memorial of Shastri in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited Rajghat and Vijay Ghat and paid floral tributes.
October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is observed globally as the International Day of Non-Violence. Many events were held in the country and worldwide to mark this occasion. Gandhi was fondly called ‘Bapu’ and he won freedom for India from the British rule by following principles of Ahimsa.

Honourable Minister for Health and Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu, Thiru Ma.Subramanian launched ‘EPIMED – Electrophysiology and Interventional Cardiology at Medway’ in the presence of Dr. T. Palaniappan, Chairman, Medway Group of Hospitals at a ceremony on account of World Heart Day 2022 hosted by the Medway Heart Institute and Medway Hospitals.

The Medway Heart Institute and Medway Hospitals felicitated doctors for their outstanding dedication and valuable contribution in cardiology at the ceremony.

The event was also graced by stalwart doctors in the field of cardiology, including Dr. K. M. Cherian, Dr. R. Alagesan, Dr. J.S. Satyanarayan Murthy, Dr. V. Jagannathan, Dr. S. Shanmugasundaram, Dr. Krishnaswamy Subramanian, Dr. I. Sathyamurthy and Dr. D. Vaidyanathan.

Dr. T. Palaniappan, Chairman, Medway Group of Hospitals, spoke on the occasion, highlighting the numerous achievements of the Medway Heart Institute within just one year since its inauguration in October 2021. He also thanked the Health Minister and veteran cardiologists who were in attendance, adding, “It is truly a privilege for me to be in the presence of such an esteemed group of people today, each doctor being a doyen in cardiology and cardiac surgery. All of them have accomplished numerous feats in revolutionising treatment of heart conditions and transformed Chennai into a hub for the best-in-class cardiac care in the country. From such distinguished doctors and surgeons who have been my teachers and mentors, I seek their blessings, support and guidance for the further growth and success of the Medway Heart Institute in the coming years”.

Following the welcome speech by Dr. T. Palaniappan and the chief guest address by Health Minister Thiru. Ma. Subramanian, the event also included the launch of EPIMED – Electrophysiology and Interventional Cardiology at Medway, a training program for the next generation of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, from the Medway Academy. The doyens in cardiology were felicitated with mementos by the Chief Guest of the evening, Health Minister Thiru. Ma Subramanian. The evening concluded with a vote of thanks.

This was part of the cluster of activities organised by the Medway Group of Hospitals – other events being a badminton tournament, a walkathon and a community awareness drive on tips for a healthy heart at busy traffic signals across the city. Medway Hospitals and the Medway Heart Institute conducted these events to commemorate World Heart Day 2022 which is observed on September 29 every year, to raise awareness among the general public on the importance of maintaining optimal heart functions, preventing cardiovascular disease and leading a long healthy life.

Dhoni and Kapil enjoy a game of golf

Death Certificate of Queen Elizabeth II says she died of old age

Queen Elizabeth II died of old age on September 8 says her death certificate. She died at her Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands at the age of 96.


She was the longest serving monarch in British history and served the nation for 70 years from 1952 to 2022. The death certificate was released by the National Records of Scotland. It shows that her death was registered on September 16 by the Queen’s only daughter Princess Anne. If the Queen had passed away in England, there would not have been any necessity to register her death but since she died in Scotland, her death had to be registered.
The death was certified by Douglas James Allan Glass, a local General Practitioner in the village of Braemar near Balmoral. The Queen’s health had been on the decline since October 2021 and she was forced to cancel many official engagements due to her poor health.

Supreme Court passes landmark judgment on women’s right to abortions

The Supreme Court on Thursday, passed a landmark judgment on a woman’s right to abortion. It held that a woman’s marital status cannot be a ground to deny her the right of abortion and that all women are entitled to safe and legal abortion under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.


As per the National Family Health Survey -5 released this year, nearly 3 % of pregnancies resulted in abortion. The main reasons were an unplanned pregnancy, health factors, complications in pregnancy and the non-willingness of the husband to continue with the pregnancy. A small percentage stated that female foetus was also a cause. Some others cited economic reasons for their reason to abort.
The United Nations Population Fund’s State of the World Population Report 2022 stated that unsafe abortions are one of the reasons for maternal mortality in India and that around 8 women die due to unsafe abortions.

Akash Ambani is the only Indian on Time’s 100 Emerging Leaders List

Akash Ambani, son of Mukesh Ambani who heads India’s largest telecom firm Jio, has been named in the Time 100 Next list He is the only Indian on the list.
Akash, who is putting in a lot of hard work, was expected to rise in the business. He was made the Chairman of Jio in June this year. The company is said to be India’s largest with over 426 million subscribers.


The list features emerging leaders in business, entertainment, sports, politics, health, science and activism. American singer SZA, actress Sydney Sweeney, basketball player Ja Micrant, Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, actor and television personality Keke Palmer and environment activist Farwiza Farhan are some of the names on the list. Amrapali Gan, who is an Indian-born American business leader is also featured on this list.

Music college inaugurated in Mumbai in honour of Lata Mangeshkar

On the event of the 93rd birth anniversary of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde inaugurated a music college named after her in the Kalina Campus of the University of Mumbai yesterday. The melody queen passed away on February 6th.


The name of the college is Bharat Ratna Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar International Music College. It is reported that 7,000 sqm of land at Kalina is being handed over to the Culture Department for building the college. Many senior ministers including the Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were present at the inauguration.
The University will offer six certificate courses of one year each in Hindustani classical music, Indian flute, tabla, sitar, harmonium, keyboard and sound engineering. It will be launched with 150 students initially.
