Online invites for Republic Day Parade
The Republic Day celebrations will take place in the revamped Central Vista avenue and the government has put 32,000 tickets on sale online according to defence ministry officials.
This is the first time that official invites for the ceremony will be sent online. The workers of Central Vista project, their family members, maintenance workers of Kartavya Path, vegetable vendors, milk booth workers, grocery shopkeepers and rickshaw pullers will be ”special invitees” for the ceremony.

More than a lakh people used to attend the Republic Day celebrations before the Covid-19 pandemic. This year around 42,000 people are expected to attend the event and 32,000 tickets have been put up online. New bleachers and retractable seats have been put up in the lawns of the Kartavya Path with more space between two seats.
Jacinda Ardern to resign as PM next month
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has decided to resign from her post in February. This announcement has come as a shock for many. She held back her tears and said that her five and a half years as Prime Minister was tough and that she had no more in the tank to continue leading the country but there were colleagues who could take over from her.

Voting for a new leader in the ruling Labour Party will take place on Sunday and the new leader will be Prime Minister until the next general election to be held on October 14 this year.
Jacinda Ardern was the youngest Prime Minister in 2017 when she was elected at the young age of 37. She led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in 2020. She also became the second elected world leader to give birth while in office. Her daughter will start school next year.

Tanishq launches its first US store In New Jersey
Tanishq, an Indian jewelry brand, today announced the launch of its first store in the United States. Senator Robert Menendez, Senior United States senator from New Jersey and Randhir Jaiswal, Consul General of India in New York, along with John E. McCormac, Mayor Woodbridge, Sam Joshi, Mayor Edison, Wesley Mathews, Choose New Jersey Inc., Vin Gopal, New Jersey State Senator and Congressman Frank Pallone, New Jersey, were the chief guests at the inauguration of the store.

The brand aims to meet the evolving needs of Indian Americans, who comprise 4.35 percent of the state’s total population and are 387,000 strong. According to US Census Bureau, jewelry store sales were estimated at $33.2 billion in 2020, which was a 25% increase over the previous decade. World’s oldest nun dies at 118
A French nun named Sister Andre died at the age of 118 in the southern city of Toulon. She is said to have been the world’s oldest nun. The city’s mayor Hubert Falco announced the news of her death on Twitter.

Sister Andre died in a nursing home in her sleep. She was born as Lucile Randon on February 11, 1904. Before she became a Catholic nun, she looked after children during the Second World War and later spent 28 years caring for orphans and elderly people at a hospital.
When she turned 118 last year, she received a handwritten birthday note from French President Emmanuel Macron. Sister Andre dedicated most of her life to religious service.
Greta Thunberg detained by the police
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was hauled away and detained by the police during a protest at a German village that is being razed to make way for coal mine expansion. There have been protests at Lutzerath, a tiny village that is slated to be cleared and demolished to make way for the nearby Garzweiler coal mine. Around 15,000 people joined in the demonstrations held on Saturday.

The entire group of protestors along with Greta Thunberg have been arrested by the police in the western village of Luetzerath. Images show Greta being picked up by police officers wearing helmets and taken to a waiting bus. She was released later according to reports.
Thunberg traveled to Germany to join the Lutzerath demonstrations. According to climate activists, the mine will lead to more greenhouse gas emissions and it could cause Germany to miss its climate targets under the Paris Agreement.
Passenger plane crashes in Nepal’s Pokhara
A passenger plane carrying 72 people on board crashed into forested land located on the banks of the Seti River that flows between the old domestic airport and Pokhara International Airport on Sunday.

Nepal’s Yeti Airlines confirmed that 66 passengers are dead. The twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft from Kathmandu crashed shortly before landing in Pokhara, a major tourist destination in the Himalayan nation. There were five Indian passengers on board, all of whom were from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh.
Rescue work is going on and the Black Box has been recovered from the crash site. It is said to be the worst air crash in three decades in the small Himalayan nation.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has set up a panel to investigate the accident and a report is expected within 45 days.
Security breach at Rahul Gandhi’s yatra
There was a security breach at the Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi. A man from Hoshiarpur in Punjab ran towards Rahul and hugged him, raising concerns over his security cordon. Rahul currently has Z+ category security cover and eight to nine commandos guard him 24×7.

A video clip of the incident shows a man lunging towards Rahul who was taken aback and hugged him before security personnel and Congress workers pulled him away. Rahul later continued the yatra. This incident came weeks later after the Congress party raised concerns over the security of Rahul Gandhi and demanded enhanced security cover for him. The Centre and security forces replied that Rahul himself had breached his security cover over 100 times since 2020.
Rahul has been advised by security agencies not to walk certain stretches during the yatra in Kashmir where he will conclude his yatra as it is a sensitive area.
Tennis star Sania Mirza announces retirement
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has announced her retirement from professional tennis. She will retire after the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships in February.

Sania will play in the Australian Open 2023 and this will be her last Grand Slam. She posted an emotional letter on her social media accounts where she stated that it was her biggest honour to win medals for her country. She thanked her parents, sister, family, coaches, physios, trainers, fans, supporters, partners for their help, support and contribution over the years.
Sania’s Grand Slam journey started with the Australian Open in 2005 and she is planning to end her career with the same Grand Slam.
Sania plans to spend time with her son after retirement and lead a quieter and calmer life.
Man who threw an egg at King Charles is fined
Harry May, a 21 year old man who threw an egg at King Charles III during a royal walkabout last year was fined $122 and ordered to pay costs as well after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

This incident took place when King Charles went to Luton on December 6. 2022. to meet community leaders in order to open a new Sikh temple. The egg thrown by Harry May landed near the King as he chatted with locals.
Harry May told police that he threw the egg because he felt that the King was visiting a town like Luton which was a deprived, poor area in bad taste. Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring accepted that May was not trying to hit the King with the egg but that the attack was ”planned” and ”targeted” King Charles. He therefore imposed a fine of $122 on Harry May.
Elvis Presley’s daughter dies of cardiac arrest
Musician Lisa Marie Presley, the only daughter of Elvis Presley died of cardiac arrest at the age of 54. The news was shared by her mother Priscilla Presley.
According to her mother, Lisa was the most passionate, strong and loving woman she has ever known. Lisa suffered cardiac arrest at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas on Thursday and was rushed to hospital.

Lisa inherited her father’s Graceland mansion in Memphis, a popular tourist attraction. She was only 9 years old when Elvis died in 1977.
Lisa’s music career began in 2003 with her debut album ”To Whom It May Concern”. She married four times and all the marriages ended in a divorce. She was married to Danny Keough, Michael Jackson, Nicholas Cage and Michael Lockwood. Lisa had four children, 3 daughters and a son. Her son died in 2020 at the age of 27.
Tamil Nadu government skips Governor’s Pongal event
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi hosted a Pongal event yesterday. It was attended by top leaders of the AIADMK and others. The DMK leaders and their allies did not attend the event.
This comes days after the controversy of the Governor’s customary address to the State Assembly. The Governor made certain deviations against which Chief Minister MK Stalin moved a resolution and the Governor ended up walking out of the House.

A colourful cultural programme highlighting the folk arts of Tamil Nadu was held at the sprawling Raj Bhavan garden. The Governor was dressed in traditional Tamil attire and personally greeted the invitees with his wife.
