Space legend Peggy Whitson to mentor Shubhanshu Shukla on mission

Dr. Peggy Annette Whitson will command the upcoming Axiom-4 mission, also referred to as Mission Akash Ganga. This will be a landmark moment for international space collaboration between India and the US.

Dr. Peggy will command the mission in which India’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will serve as the mission pilot. Dr. Peggy whois 64 years old brings her experience to the mission. She spent 675 days in space more than any other American astronaut and her career spans over 38 years of experience both with NASA and Axiom Space where she currently serves as Director of Human Spaceflight.
The Ax-4 mission that is being operated by Houston based private space company Axion Space under a commercial contract with NASA will carry a diverse international crew aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. Besides Dr. Peggy and Shukla, the crew includes Slawosz Ulznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.

Indian rock band features on America’s Got Talent

For the first time, an Assamese Indian rock band featured in the show America’s Got Talent.  The band named Girish and The Chronicles received a standing ovation from judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Sofia Vergara  and Melanie ”Mel B”during the auditions on America’s Got Talent.

The band created history to become the first rock band to hit the AGT stage and also the first Indian band to get qualified for the next round.
The four member band performed a reverb-drenched cover of Adele’s song Set Fire to the Rain and left the judges spell bound. In fact Mel B called it her favourite performance of the season.
The band was formed in 2009 by brothers Girish and Yogesh Pradhan along with Suraz Karki and Nagen Mongrati. They initially performed in Gangtok’s underground scene inspired by rock legends like Die and Guns N Roses.
They later shifted to Bengaluru and now are representing the country at the global stage.

Ilaiyaraaja presented with award for Vocational Excellence

Music legend Ilaiyaraaja was honoured with an award for Vocational Excellence in Coimbatore for his outstanding contribution to Indian music. The award was presented by the Rotary Club.

He is known for his contribution to music for over four decades during which he composed music for more than a thousand films in both Tamil and Telugu. During the felicitation ceremony, several organizations and industrialists paid tribute to him by presenting him with shawls and bouquets.
He was born as R.Gnanadesikan on June 3, 1943 in Pannaipuram, a village in Theni district of Tamil Nadu. He started his journey into music at a young age and captivated audiences of all ages.
He has a unique ability to blend folk music with classical music. He has composed a plethora of hit songs for films and his influence extends beyond the film industry. His music has captured a range of human emotions from joy to sorrow.

Teenager becomes youngest judge in Massachusetts

Henry Buckley who is just 16 years in age has created history by becoming the youngest judge and has challenged perceptions about the role of youth in public service.

The teenager from Hingham in Massachusetts was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace along with other officials who were more than double his age.
Henry got four signatures on an application and a reference letter from a member of his community. He submitted the application to the Governor’s office.
Governor Maura T Healey nominated Harry and the application was sent to the Governor’s Council where he was unanimously affirmed. He then received his commission and was formally sworn in as a Justice of the Peace.
Justice of the Peace appointeesserve for seven years and perform a number of duties including notarizing documents, conducting marriages, taking dispositions and even maintaining public order if necessary.

Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko injured in road accident

Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko and his family were travelling  in a car when it hit a static truck near Palacode in Dharmapuri district. The actor sustained injuries but his father died on the spot.

According to the police, the 41 year old actor Shine Tom Chacko from Thrissur in Kerala and his family members were travelling to Bengaluru from Thrissur to get a medical check-up done for his father CP Chacko.
When the car was nearing Peraiyur at Palacode in Dharmapuri district, the driver Anis lost control of the car and hit a stationary truck. Due to the impact of the crash, the front portion of the car was smashed completely and the father of the actor died on the spot.
Shine Tom and his brother Joe John and the manager of Shine Tom, sustained grievous injuries. The Palacode police rushed to the spot and admitted the injured persons to Dharmapuri government Medical College Hospital for treatment. The body of his father CP Chacko was sent for an autopsy.

Viswanathan Anand wins ”Clash of Generations” exhibition match

Five time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand defeated Oro, one of the promising players of Argentina in a ”Clash of Generations” match. He defeated Faustino Oro 2-0 in Tuscany.

Faustino Oro is a 11 year old chess prodigy . However, he was no match for Anand’s chess skills as he went crashing down 2-0 to lose in a one-sided match. In spite of the 11 year old displaying maturity and calmness much beyond his age, he was just not good enough for the semi retired Anand.
Oro is considered to be one of the most promising players on the chess circuit. He is the youngest ever International Master in chess history and is only one out of three players to achieve the title before turning 11.
Anand played with white pieces in the first game and after 57 moves, Oro was forced to resign. In the second game, Anand had black pieces and this time too, Oro resigned.
There was a unique opening ceremony and both players were brought to the match venue in a specially designed horse drawn carriage.

11 people killed in stampede in Bengaluru after RCB IPL victory

A day after team RCB won the IPL trophy, there was a stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru that left 11 people dead and 56 injured. The stampede took place during the victory celebrations of RCB.

Chief Minister Siddharamaiah has suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B.Dayananda pending enquiry together with the other officials who were in the jurisdiction where the stadium is located.
He has announced a judicial enquiry by a one-man commission led by former Karnataka High Court judge Michael D’ Cunha.
An FIR has been lodged against RCB, Karnataka State Cricket Association and the event management team.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Government has handed over the probe of the stampede to the Criminal Investigation Department. A Special Investigation Team within the CID will be formed to carry out an independent probe.

Madras HC judge visits litigant’s bed-ridden father at his home

Justice GR Swaminathan took his wife Kamakshi who is a special educator and has experience dealing with mentally ill people to visit a bed-ridden father of a litigant at his home to ascertain his mental condition.

The judge decided to visit the 83 year old man at his residence in Kodambakkam in Chennai. The octogenarian suffered a stroke in 2021 and lost his ability to speak. He has been fed through a tube since then.
In this case, Sivakumar Chellathurai filed a petition to appoint him as manager of his father PKM Durai’ properties and to dispose them.as well. He also filed a sub-application to direct his mother and youngest brother to admit his father in hospital and asserted that his father was mentally ill.
When the judge visited his home, he was shown two papers with the words home and hospital. The octogenarian touched the word home. He had a detailed discussion with the younger brother of the applicant.
The petition filed by the applicant was held as not maintainable as there were no merits in it.

Businessman mauled by lion while using toilet at lodge in Namibia

A lion attacked and killed a businessman in northwest Namibia. Bernd Kebbel was camping with his family and friends when this incident happened. He left the tent to visit the toilet at a luxury lodge in a remote northwest region of Namibia.

The lion is said to have pounced on Kebbel the minute he left the tent. The other campers rushed to his rescue but by the time they managed to chase the lion, Kebbel had already died.
The Namibian Police spokesperson Elifas Kuwinga said that the officers have visited the scene and are preparing a full report of the incident and it will be submitted in due course.
Kebbel was a well known person in his community and was involved in both philanthropy and wildlife conservation.
The area where the incident took place is known for the population of more than a dozen lion cubs and around 60 adult lions.

Nagarjuna’s son Akhil to wed Zainab on June 6

The Akkineni family is getting ready for another wedding. This time Akhil, the younger son of Nagarjuna is all set to marry artist Zainab Ravdjee on June 6, 2025. The wedding is expected to be filled with glitz and glamour.

Zainab comes from a successful family in the construction industry. Her father Zulfi Ravdjee is a pioneer in the industry and her brother Zain Ravdjee is the Chairman and Managing Director of ZR Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd.
Even though she hails from a business background, Zainab chose the path of her choice and became an artist. She held a solo art exhibition in Hyderabad and her creative work has been much appreciated.
She is also interested in skincare perfumery and runs a fragrance blog called ”Once Upon The Skin”. She explores the stories behind various fragrances, their ingredients etc.
Though her net worth is not known, she leads a comfortable and independent life. She was in a relationship with Akhil for a few years before they got engaged.

World Champion D Gukesh defeats Magnus Carlsen in the Norway Chess 2025 tournament

World Chess Champion D Gukesh defeated five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen at the Norway Chess 2025 Tournament in a classical chess game for the first time in his career.

Carlsen was winning the game but blundered and the 19 year old Gukesh pounced on the blunder and turned the game around in his favour.A visibly angry Magnus was seen punching the table in frustration and stomping off. Gukesh was taken aback by the result and was absorbing the emotion of a milestone victory.
Gukesh played with white pieces and was playing under firm pressure. He capitalized on a rare blunder made by the 34 year old Carlsen in the endgame and converted it into a memorable win.Though Carlsen was playing in front of his home crowd and had the upper hand in the game, Gukesh defended with composure and precision.and went on to win the game.

Justice Nagarathna will be the first woman CJI

Justice Nagarathna who is currently the fifth senior most judge in the Supreme Court will become the 55th Chief Justice of India in September 2027. She will become the first ever woman Chief Justice of India.

However, she will hold the post for a very short period of 36 days from September 24 2027 to October 29, 2027. It will be the third shortest tenure in the history of the Supreme Court.Justice Nagarathna is the daughter of Justice ES Venkataramiah, who was the 19th Chief Justice of India.
She began her practise in 1987 and started practising independently in 1994 and focussed on administrative, constitutional, commercial and family law.
She was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in February 2008 and made permanent in 2010. She was elevated to the Supreme Court in August 2021.
She has been part of many Constitution Bench judgments of the Supreme Court and has delivered dissenting opinions in many cases.

D Gukesh celebrates 19th birthday with win over Nakamura

World Champion D Gukesh defeated World No 2 Hikaru Nakamura to win his first game in Norway Chess 2025. This win came on his special day, his birthday and he turned 19 on May 29

He lost the first two rounds to World No 1 Magnus Carlsen and to fellow Indian Arjun Erigaisi. There was hence a lot of pressure on him as he faced Nakamura in round three. Gukesh played with white pieces for the first time in the event and looked solid right from the start of the game.
Though Gukesh struggled a bit in the endgame with making the right moves, he was precise and Nakamura was forced to resign on the 42nd move.
Gukesh will play round 4 against Fabiano Caruana again with white pieces while Carlsen will play against Arjun Erigaisi.Carlsen lost a couple of games one against Nakamura and another against Chinese GM Wei Yi.

Meet the talented and charming Latha Venkat. She was born to K.N. Ramaswamy who served as the Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Kamala Ramaswamy who was a singer and supporter of art. She has two younger siblings- sisters Kala Anand and Mala Satish.               

Latha did her schooling at The Children’s Garden School and completed her graduation in English Literature at Ethiraj College. She followed it up with a PG Diploma in Public Relations and Advertising.

Her life partner K. Venkitachalam is a retired FMCG professional who is currently the Deputy Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. They have been blessed with a daughter and twin sons who are into fields of their interest.

Armed with 30 plus years of experience in senior positions at various organizations including the prestigious post of Executive Director of IIT Madras Alumni Association and CEO of IIT Bombay Alumni Association, Latha currently works for an NGO.

Right from her childhood, she took to stage as a duck takes to water and excelled in it. She loved acting and it came naturally to her. She remembers playing lead roles in dramas, plays and theatre both in school and in college.

Latha credits her mother who motivated her to put her talents to use. As the stage is where her heart is, she never missed a single play. It was only after her mother passed away in 2017,  it dawned on Latha that she should take her mother’s words seriously and it was at that moment that she put her foot forward and got back to stage to start doing plays, advertisements and short films. 

She recently acted in Girish Karnad’s play ‘’Broken Images’’. She played the role of Shabana Azmi in the Tamil version titled ‘’Anniyal’’ which is a 80 minute monologue. Her plays have been staged throughout the country and she has received a lot of appreciation for her acting skills.

Latha also featured in some webseries, of JFW titled ‘’Chennaikku Pudusu’’, in ‘’Valiamai Tharayo’’ streamed on Vikatan TV and in ‘’Sweet Karam Coffee’’ streamed on Amazon Prime.

Some notable movies that she performed in include ‘’Darala Prabhu Bhoomika’’, ‘’Writer Navarasa’’, ‘’Kathuvakkule Rendu Kaadhal’’ and ‘’Kodiyil Oruvan’’. She also played a part in Bombay Gnanam’s short film titled ‘’Entharo Mahanibavulu’’.

Besides this, she has modeled for advertisements like Tata tea, Parachute oil, Big Boss Promo, Swiggy Genie, SVS oil, Naana Naani and Prestige Mixie.

Her stage presence has won her awards like Best Actor in the Short and Sweet Festival 2024 and the Karthik Rajagopal Rolling Trophy for a promising lead actress in the play Anniyal from the Mylapore Arts Academy.

Blessed with the gift of the gab, Latha also anchors shows and the most notable and memorable show she has done till date was Ilaiyaraaja’s 76th birthday celebrations that had a large audience of around 50,000 people.

A person who loves what she is doing, she never feels the need to unwind. Her work involves event management and according to her, there is no work stress whatsoever. 

During her free time, she enjoys watching movies and documentaries with a bowl of popcorn. 

Her soul food is curd rice and Keerai Molagootal, a typical Palakkad Tamil Brahmin dish made with keerai is her favourite dish. She also relishes sweets like rasagollas, bengali sweets and sandesh. The all favourite ice cream too is on this list.

She likes to read books especially the ones by Ayn Rand and listen to music her favourite musician being Ilaiyaraaja.

When it comes to sport, she gets to watch more of football because of her two sons. At times she also follows badminton and tennis. Cricketer Kapil Dev is her childhood crush and on the whole, she loves watching all types of sport.

Besides a creative side, Latha also has a philanthropic side and sets aside a sum of money to pay for the education of children from poor families in her locality. She opines that education can change the fortune of a family. She imbibed this trait from her parents who lent a helping hand to people in the vicinity. Instead of going shopping and splurging on items one can do without, Latha gets happiness in putting that money aside to help the needy.

She proudly narrates that even her children have inherited this helping nature and how her twin sons gave free football coaching to government school children in Bengaluru.

In order to make the world a better place for the entire human race, she feels that each person can pitch in with a small contribution to change lives and that will make all the difference.
