Justice Nagarathna who is currently the fifth senior most judge in the Supreme Court will become the 55th Chief Justice of India in September 2027. She will become the first ever woman Chief Justice of India.
However, she will hold the post for a very short period of 36 days from September 24 2027 to October 29, 2027. It will be the third shortest tenure in the history of the Supreme Court.Justice Nagarathna is the daughter of Justice ES Venkataramiah, who was the 19th Chief Justice of India.
She began her practise in 1987 and started practising independently in 1994 and focussed on administrative, constitutional, commercial and family law.
She was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court in February 2008 and made permanent in 2010. She was elevated to the Supreme Court in August 2021.
She has been part of many Constitution Bench judgments of the Supreme Court and has delivered dissenting opinions in many cases.
