Miss Czech Republic crowned Miss World 2024

Krystyna Pyszkova from the Czech Republic has been crowned Miss World 2024 at a glittering ceremony that took place in Mumbai on Saturday, March 9th. There were a series of events, talent, public speaking etc and the top 4 were selected.

Krystyna is a 23 year old law student and model. She spoke on removing the stigma and shame surrounding menstruation and said that being a woman is a gift and periods should not be a taboo subject.
The runners up were Yasmina Zeytoun of Lebanon, Ache Abrahams from Trinidad and Tobago and Lesego Chombo from Botswana.
Krystyna replaces the outgoing Miss World Karolina Bielawaka of Poland who won the crown in March 2022. 112 women participated in the contest from all over the globe.

Banks likely to work only 5 days in a week

At present, banks work for two Saturdays in a month. They are open on the first and third Saturdays and closed on the second and fourth Saturdays. They may soon have a five day week and work only from Monday to Friday.

The All India Bank Officers Confederation released a statement saying that discussions between the Indian Banks Association and the All India Bank Officers Confederation were successful and a Joint Note was signed to this effect.
The Joint Note recognises all Saturdays as holidays and is pending approval from the government. The revised working hours will also be effective after notification by the government. Some reports say that bank employees will work an additional 40 minutes per day from 9.45 am to 5.30 pm.
When the government approves of it, all Saturdays will be notified as holidays under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Sudha Murty nominated by President to Rajya Sabha

Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu on International Women’ s Day on March 8th. She received the Padma Bhushan award last year for social work.

The President of India nominates 12 members to the Upper House of Parliament for their contribution in the fields of arts, literature, sciences and social services.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X that he was delighted to hear that Sudha Murty was nominated to the Rajya Sabha for her contribution to various fields and that her presence would be a powerful testament to the country’s ”Nari Shakti”. He wished her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.
Sudha Murty is currently the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. Her husband Narayana Murthy is the founder of ITgiant Infosys. The Prime Minister of the UK Rishi Sunak is her son-in-law.

Meet Divya Abhishek, a remarkable and accomplished individual hailing from Chennai. Born to N. Sukumar, a Chartered Accountant, and Usha Sukumar, Divya’s journey from her early years at Vidya Mandir showcased her love for reading and an innate passion for learning.

Determined to pursue her intellectual interests, Divya’s studious nature led her to excel academically. She completed her Commerce degree from Madras University and furthered her education with a post-graduation in Business Administration. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge led her to achieve All India Ranks in Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary, Cost Accountancy and LLB courses. She also completed her certification in International Tax Law and Transfer Pricing from Leiden University, Netherlands. She has obtained Advanced Diploma in International Taxation conducted by the Chartered Institute of Taxation and also has a Diploma in International Financial Reporting Standards from the ACCA London.

Fascinated by numbers, Divya delved into the field of finance at the age of 17, managing a dual commitment to work and correspondence courses at Madras University. Currently, she works with her family concern along with her father, aunt, father in law and husband Abhishek.

Family plays a pivotal role in Divya’s life. Her elder sister Aishwarya, her sister’s husband Harish and his brother Barath share a close bond with her. Divya is married to Abhishek Murali and the couple has two lovely sons. An accomplished speaker, Divya has addressed over 1050 meetings and a TEDx speaker as well. She has co-authored a book on “Income Tax Ready Referencer”. She authored books on corporate social responsibility and the technical guide on Social Stock Exchange published by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. Balancing a hectic schedule, Divya starts her day at 6:30, spending quality time with her toddlers and managing her professional commitments. She is the Chairperson of the Southern Regional Council of ICMAI, and credits her father-in-law V Murali for his mentorship and guidance. She is a visiting faculty at National academy of Direct taxes, C&AG, ICSI institute, ICAI institute and also at her alma mater, Madras University, where she takes classes for MBA students. She also sits on the academic boards of various institutions.

In her pursuit of personal well-being, Divya, a former district-level badminton player, now unwinds with non-fiction books and Netflix shows. Her favorite foods include chaat and garlic bread

Madras HC refuses to pass orders on lawyers indefinite fast

The Madras High Court has refused to pass any orders in connection with an indefinite fast by a group of lawyers who are demanding that Tamil is recognised as one of the official languages of the High Court.

The matter came up this morning before Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy and the judges held that there was no ground for them to pass orders as it was a political matter and suggested that members of the Bar should initiate a dialogue with the State government to resolve the issue.
The Court said that it understood the importance of human lives and asked the Government Pleader to bring the issue to the notice of the government.
Some lawyers have been on a fast for the past 8 days and two of them including a 91 year old had to be admitted to a hospital.

Former World Chess Champion Gary Kasparov added to terrorist list

Russian financial watchdog Rosfinmonitoring has included former World Chess Champion and political activist Gary Kasparov to its list of terrorists and extremists.

Gary Kasparov has been a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has been constantly criticizing his decision for Russia’s military attack on Ukraine.
Rosfinmonitoring, which is responsible for combating money laundering as well as terror financing now has the power to freeze the bank accounts of Kasparov.
The reasons for this move have not been disclosed and many human rights organizations are arguing that it is a tactic by the Kremlin to suppress dissent.
Kasparov who is considered to be one of the world’s greatest chess players has resided in the United States for more than 10 years and is engaged in political activism.

Karan Johar to host the 71st edition of Miss World

The 71st edition of the Miss World 2024 pageant is currently going on in India. The grand finale will be held on March 9 in Mumbai at the Jio World Convention Centre at 7.30 pm (IST). The event will be streamed live on Sony.

Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar will host the grand finale. He has won many film awards including two National Film Awards. He has also been conferred with the Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.
This prestigious event is returning to India after 28 long years. The Miss World pageant was established in the year 1951 and it focuses on empowerment of women through philanthropic endeavours and community service.
Sini Shetty is representing India on the global platform.

Five Indians are in World top 20 in the FIDE rating list for March 2024

FIDE, a chess governing body , publishes the rating list of chess players at the beginning of each month. In the list for March 2024, five Indians are in the World top 20 list. They are Vishy Anand, Arjun Erigaisi, D.Gukesh, R.Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi.

Among the women players, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, Dronavalli Harika, andR.Vaishali feature in the list. Humpy is no 5 in the list, Harika is no 11, Vaishali is no 14 and  Divya is World no 38.
Vishy Anand is back in the World top 10.and is India’s no 1 again. Arjun Erigaisi is India’s no 2 player.
India is currently at no 2 in terms of the average rating of top 10 players and are just 9 Elo points behind the USA.

India’s Sini Shetty wins Best designer dress from Asia and Oceania

The 71st Miss World pageant 2024 is currently happening in India and has captured audiences throughout the globe. It commenced on February 18 and will conclude on March 9. A new Miss World 2024 will be crowned and will succeed the reigning Miss World 2021, Karolina Bielawska from Poland.

This event is being held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. It was originally slated to be held in the United Arab Emirates but was shifted to India.
Sini Shetty is representing India at this pageant. She won the Best Designer Dress from Asia and Oceania and has secured a spot in the top 20.
Sini Shetty wore a dazzling gown designed by a renowned fashion designer Rocky Star. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has once again become the world’s richest person and has overtaken Elon Musk. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos’ net worth was $200 billion on Monday compared to Elon Musk’s wealth of $198 billion. Close behind is Bernard Arnault, LVMH Chief at $197 billion.

Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault have taken turns to top the ranking which measures personal wealth based on changes in markets and the economy.
Bezos started e-commerce giant Amazon in 1994 from his garage in Seattle. He also founded a space company named Blue Origin and bought the Washington Post for $250 million.
Bezos purchased property in Miami last year and he spends time on his $500 million superyacht with his partner Lauren Sanchez.

Controversy over China flag on Indian rocket advertisement

An advertisement in the newspaper hailing the creation of a second launch pad for ISRO, in Kulasekarapattinam has led to a controversy as there was an image of the Chinese flag on the rocket in the poster.

The advertisement was said to be commissioned by Animal Husbandry Minister of Tamil Nadu Anitha Radhakrishnan. She did it in her personal capacity and highlighted the DMK’s role in bringing the long pending project to the state.
Though the Minister was not available for an explanation, Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi in whose constituency the ISRO facility will be built, acknowledged the error and stated that it was an error done by the artwork designer.
Prime Minister Modi and the BJP have pointed out the error and expressed their displeasure. They also slammed the DMK government and said that the DMK should be punished for their deeds.
