The State witnessed a hike in the price of alternatives to plastic like cloth bags and banana leaves. A cloth bag rate went up to Rs 50 from Rs 3 and a banana leaf shot up to Rs 15 from Rs 2. Many shops and restaurants have shifted over to alternatives. Poultry stall owners are offering discounts to those who bring their own vessels to carry home the meat.

Some Tasmac outlets had replaced plastic cups with glass tumblers.  Hotels began to ask customers to bring their own tiffin carriers to carry the food. They now pack food in banana leaves and are yet to find a viable option for packing chutney and sambar. Many shoppers were seen carrying cloth bags to buy vegetables and groceries.
