Seema Kushwaha, the lawyer for the Nirbhaya gang rape case in 2012 in Delhi has been approached by the family of the alleged gang rape victim in Hathras to be their lawyer. However Seema has not been allowed to meet the family as the administration is preventing her from doing so citing  law and order problems.
This 36 year old Supreme Court lawyer is from Uttar Pradesh and was the first girl in her village to finish school. She did law at the Kanpur University. She then pursued her Masters degree in political science from the Indira Gandhi Open University  during the time when the gang rape took place. She used to participate in vigils held  for Nirbhaya as a student and after graduating in 2014, she became Asha Devi’s ( Nirbhaya victim’s mother)  official lawyer. She not only handled the case without taking fees, but is also a legal advisor to the NGO constituted by the Nirbhaya victim’s family – Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust which was formed to assist women who experienced violence to get shelter and legal assistance.
