New Chief Justice of Madras High Court takes charge

Justice S.V. Gangapurwala who has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court assured the bar that he would adopt the culture and traditions of Tamil Nadu.

The Madras High Court has got a Chief Justice after almost 9 months. This position was vacant after the superannuation of Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari in September 2022. After this Justice Duraiswamy, Justice T.Raja and Justice Vaidyanathan served as the Acting Chief Justice.

Justice Gangapurwala was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on Sunday the 28th of May 2023. Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office in Raj Bhavan after presenting him the warrant of appointment.

Justice Gangapurwala was born into a family of lawyers. He was a judge of the Bombay High Court for the past 12 years and was elevated to the position of Acting Chief Justice of the chartered High Court of Mumbai in December 2022.
