The World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a study about women’s health and family planning and found that  74 million women living in low and middle income group countries have unintended pregnancies annually. This led to 25 million unsafe abortions and 47000 maternal deaths every year.
The WHO warned that unwanted pregnancies would lead to a number of risks for the mother like malnutrition, illness and even death. In India alone, the number of abortions that took place in 2015 was 15.6 million. The WHO stressed the need for modern means of contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies. High quality family planning would not only improve the health of women but also help in social and economic development, education and empowerment of women.
