The Madras High Court granted 30 days of ordinary leave to S. Nalini a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. She argued her petition in person in a choked voice that she be allowed to step out of prison in order to make arrangements for the wedding of her daughter.

The judges also directed the State Government to bear the expenses of providing escort to her during the period of leave as she expressed her difficulty in paying those charges. She was directed to refrain from giving interviews to the media or meeting leaders of political parties or any other organizations during the 30 day leave period. She had sought leave of 6 months but the court restricted it to 30 days because of the prevalent rules in this regard. Her daughter is now 27 years old and is based in the UK.
