Womens Christian College won the annual inter-collegiate debate ‘Blitzkrieg’ organised by the Loyola Debating Society in the city on Wednesday.
Arguing that the ‘Social Media Is A Threat To Free Speech’, the team comprising Shilpa and Sanjana contended that online platforms amplify hate speech.
Judging the final debate and presiding over the Valedictory event, Lawyer, Columnist, Author, former NDTV Resident Editor & former President of the Loyola Debating Society Sanjay Pinto, mooted the idea of making debating an elective course in the college. “Education is outside the classroom as well” Sanjay Pinto remarked. The former National Debating Champion recalled how he used to get attendance and even “skipped exams to participate in debates during my time.”
Loyola College Rector Fr. A.M. Jayapathy Francis and Deputy Principal Dr. Fatima Vasanth promised to consider the “good suggestion during the upcoming course restructuring exercise.”  Dr.Fatima Vasant noted how “we all miss Sanjay Pinto on NDTV” and told the gathering that had judged some of his debates in the past. “Sanjay would mesmerise the audience with his flamboyance and eloquence. It used to be electrifying.”
The college recalled how Sanjay Pinto had broken a record in the college 25 years ago for the maximum number of inter-collegiate debates won by a student, surpassing the one created in 1974 by his own Principal Fr. Xavier Alphonse.
Loyola Debating Society Coordinator Dr. Annam Ragamalika welcomed the gathering. Joint Secretary Joshua Rajesh, whose father Rajesh was Sanjay’s collegemate and President Joseph Roy also spoke at the event.
