World No 1 Magnus Carlsen walked away as the winner of the Norway Chess tournament for the seventh time. He just about managed to edge past Gukesh and Fabiano Cruana at the finish line. Carlsen thereby demonstrated that he remains the world’s best player in all formats of the game even though he is not at his peak at the moment.
He drew the match against Arjun Erigaisi while Gukesh lost to Caruana and came third in the tournament. Carlsen lost to Gukesh in one of the rounds and his ego was bruised that he spoke about losing interest in Classical chess. He even banged on the table after he blundered against current World Champion Gukesh. It took him several minutes to compose himself.
Gukesh on the other hand was inconsolable after he lost the last round to Caruana but he still managed to finish in the third spot just ahead of GM Hikaru Nakamura.
In the women’s tournament, GM Anna Muzychuk who finished as runner-up in last year’s tournament, won the tournament this year and took home $61,617.
