Babu was trekking with his friends on Cherat Hill in Malampuzha

A 23 year old trekker, R Babu, who fell off the Cherat hill in Malampuzha, Palakkad district in Kerala was rescued after over 43 hours. The trekker had fallen off the hill but he managed to cling to a small cavity among the rocks. He went without food and water for nearly two days and had injuries on his leg.

Initial rescue efforts by local residents, police and fire and rescue services were futile due to the challenges of terrain. Even a helicopter tried to rescue him but the chopper couldn’t get anywhere near his location.  Finally Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan requested the Army and the District Disaster Management Committee to intervene. The Army’s Parachute Regiment and the Madras Regimental Centre sprang into action after a drone spotted Babu’s location. He was stuck 30 metres from the cliff top. The team then climbed down using ropes and pulled him up, completing the rescue at around 10 am. Babu was administered first aid and shifted to a hospital for further treatment. This has been one of the toughest rescue operations performed in the recent past.
