Vandana Das, a young 23 year old doctor in Kottarakkara area of Kollam district was stabbed to death by a patient she was treating. According to police sources, a man named Sandeep, a school teacher under suspension, was taken by the police for treatment for a wound on his leg after he had a fight with his family members. As the doctor was dressing up the wound, Sandeep became agitated and attacked the doctor and other people around with a pair of scissors and a scalpel. A few hours later, the doctor succumbed to her injuries. Though she was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, her life could not be saved.
Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala condoled the death of the doctor and termed the incident to be shocking and painful. He promised that an investigation would be conducted into this incident and strong action would be taken against those who attack doctors and health workers.
The Indian Medical Association and Kerala Government Medical Officers Association have staged protests and condemned this incident.
