Justice DY Chandrachud to become next CJI

Justice DY Chandrachud is all set to become the next Chief Justice of India. His name has been recommended to the government by the current CJI Justice UU Lalit for appointment as the next CJI.


Justice UU Lalit will retire on November 8 and Justice Chandrachud will take his oath as the 50th CJI on November 9th. It will make Justices YY Chandrachud and DY Chandrachud the first father-son duo to head the Indian judiciary. Justice YY Chandrachud was the Chief Justice of India from February 1978 to July 1985. His son will have a tenure of 2 years and two days as CJI.
Justice DY Chandrachud was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court in March 2000 and elevated as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in May 2016.
