Two school girls, Radhika Lakhani and Vaidehi Vekariya, both 10th grade students in a school in Surat, Gujarat, spotted an asteroid moving towards earth. They participated in a Space India and NASA project that allows students to analyse images taken by a telescope positioned at the University of Hawaii. They have named the asteroid HLV 2514.

According to Aakash Dwivedi, a senior educator and astronomer at Space India, the students were taught how to spot celestial bodies using a software which analyses images collected by NASA’S PAN STAR telescope. He explained that the asteroid is currently close to the orbit of Mars but in one million years, it will change it’s orbit and move closer to earth.
