Dr. Vivek Murthy, an Indian -American has been nominated by US President elect Joe Biden to be his Surgeon General. Biden expressed confidence in Dr. Murthy, that he will play a vital role and restore public faith and trust in science and medicine during these troubled times.Dr. Murthy is 43 years of age and he served as Surgeon General of the United States during the Obama administration but had to quit after Donald Trump became the US President. Dr. Murthy is not only a renowned physician but also a research scientist and a trusted national leader on health care.This time his role will have expanded responsibilities.

He will also be a key advisor to the President and will help to lead the government on health issues, mental health, addiction,substance use disorders, social and environmental determinants of health etc. Dr. Murthy held the post of ‘America’s Doctor’ between 2014 and 2017. Dr. Murthy said that he would dedicate himself to care for every American and will be driven by science and facts, by head and heart. He feels that serving during the time of the pandemic would no doubt be a daunting task but the country has all that it takes to get the job done to end the pandemic- world class scientists, courageous medical professionals and top vaccine companies. He was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire to immigrants from Karnataka in 1978. He advised Biden throughout his presidential campaign.
