First woman judge to head Gujarat High Court

Justice Sonia G Gokani of the Gujarat High Court will become the first woman to head the court in the 63 years of its existence. Her name was recommended by the Collegium.
The Central government has appointed Justice Sonia Gokani as the Acting Chief Justice. The former Chief Justice Aravind Kumar has been elevated to the Supreme Court.


Justice Sonia Gokani is currently the senior-most judge of the Gujarat High Court. She will take charge of office from Monday, the 13th of February. However she will have a very short tenure as Acting Chief Justice and will serve for only a fortnight as she will retire on February 25th.
She was appointed as a district judge in July 1995, was elevated as an additional judge of the Gujarat High Court in February 2011 and became a permanent judge in January 2013.
