DMK MLA J Anbazhagan died of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Chennai on Wednesday (June 10), on his 62nd birthday. He is the first legislator in the country to fall victim to Covid-19. The political leader was admitted to Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre at Chromepet on June 2. The condition of Anbazhagan, who was fighting for his life with severe Covid-19 pneumonia, rapidly deteriorated and he was declared dead at 8.55 am. The body was buried in a burial ground at Saidapet.
Anbazhagan represented the Chepauk constituency in Chennai in the Tamil Nadu assembly. A three-time MLA, Anbazhagan was elected to the assembly in 2001, 2011, and 2016. Many ministers, party members, dignitaries including DMK president M K Stalin, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam condoled the Anbazhagan’s death.
