The Drugs Controller General of India has given its approval to conduct a study on mixing the two vaccines of India – Covishield and Covaxin.
Clinical trials will begin shortly. The aim of the trial is to gauge the safety and efficacy of taking doses of two different vaccines- Covaxin and Covishield.
A panel of the subject expert committee had recommended granting permission for the study to Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore.

A small study done by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that mixing both the vaccines is safe and was found to yield better results.
The study was conducted on 18 people in Uttar Pradesh and they were administered both Covaxin and Covishield doses. It was found that the combination of vaccines gave them better immunogenicity than two doses of the same vaccine.
Other countries have already started administering mix-and-match combinations of different Covid-19 vaccines. Research conducted in other countries has shown encouraging results.
