Crimes against women highest in U.P.

As per the report cf the Annual Crime in India 2017, which was published after a delay of 2 years, it is seen that 3,59,849 cases of crime were reported against women in the country. The topper of the list was Uttar Pradesh with 56,011 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 31,979 cases and West Bengal with 30,002 cases.
Most of the cases related to cruelty of the husband and his relatives followed by assault on women to outrage her modesty, kidnapping and abduction and rape cases. Incidents registered under the Scheduled Caste Prevention of Atrocities Act increased from 5082 in 2016 to 5775 in 2017, while crimes related to Scheduled Tribes dipped from 844 in 2016 to 720 in 2017. Cases of kidnapping and abduction increased to 95,893 in 2017 from 88,008 cases registered in 2016.
