Centre asks States to be vigilant due to threat of Omicron

The Centre has asked states to be vigilant due to the presence of the highly mutant coronavirus variant, Omicron in some countries. The Union health minister has stated that India has not reported any case of Omicron. Meanwhile, the Centre has extended the nationwide Covid-19 containment measures till December 31.


Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalia has directed states and Union territories to adhere to the advisory issued by the Union Health Ministry that recommended screening and testing of all international arrivals. He also said that contacts of international travellers should be closely tracked and tested.
So far, the Omicron variant has been found in 14 countries and is being studied here. The Centre has also issued an advisory to keep a close watch on ports.
The Union Health Minister said that all possible precautions have to be taken and that the country is keeping a close watch on the Covid-19 situation in the country and abroad.
