In Tamil cinema, quite several times we see riots and clashes between groups on grounds of caste, religion, superiority and has seen several movies on these elements, set predominantly in North Madras. It has been a trend in recent times to come up with movies based on such themes. Here we have a few picks from the film which portrayed the caste clashes in Tamil cinema.

Madras

The story is set completely in North Madras and there is an issue going on with the two groups who are fighting for the Wall. Karthi is the local Chennai guy, the most literate person in his gang, he has a happy life with his best friend Anbu. All goes well until the issue of the Wall comes up and makes a 360-degree turn in everyone’s life.

Kabali

One man, Kabaleeswaran/Kabali (Rajanikanth), takes a stand for the betterment of his community. Himself a gang member working under gangster Sitaramaraj, Kabali takes over the gang leadership on Sitaramaraj’s untimely death and leads the group to betterment.

Aramm

The story begins with District Collector Madhivadhani (Nayanthara), who faces a professional challenge when a small village girl falls into a deep well. The plot revolves around how the girl is rescued and the impact of the incident in Madhivadhani’s personal life.

Kaala

Karikaalan/Kaala (Rajinikanth) is a representative of the people living in Dharavi, a big slum in Mumbai. When a political leader tries to grab the land they are living in, Kaala rises to the occasion and takes his people on a journey to resist the politician’s plans, as a true leader.

Pariyerum Perumal

Pariyerum Perumal narrates the story of a youth hailing from Puliyankulam village near Tirunelveli. Pariyerum Perumal/Pariyan (Kathir) belongs to an oppressed caste and he befriends an upper-caste girl in college. Her father comes to about the boy’s caste and he awaits a chance to teach a lesson to Pariyan and establish his caste superiority.
