A cable bridge in Gujarat collapsed on Sunday night leaving more than 130 people dead. The bridge was built during the colonial era and was renovated recently. The accident took place just a week after the renovation work was completed.

Reports say that the cable bridge snapped due to a heavy rush of people. Nine people have been arrested so far. They include the managers of Oreva, the company that renovated the bridge, ticket collectors, bridge repair contractors and security guards who were supposed to control the crowds.
The entire place was spruced up just before Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the site. The Supreme Court will hear a Public Interest Litigation on November 14th, seeking a direction to appoint a judicial commission under the supervision of retired judges to initiate a probe into the Morbi Bridge collapse.
Meanwhile search and rescue operations are continuing at the site.
