The Tamil Nadu government has taken a decision to promote all students of classes 1 to 8 due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier, the state issued orders for promotion of students from classes 9 to 11.
A circular was issued by the Director of Elementary Education M.Palanisamy which stated that headmasters should enter ”all pass” in registers based on the Right to Education Act.
Section 16 of the said Act reads ”no child shall be held back in any class or expelled from school till the completion of elementary education”.

The date of reopening of schools would be announced after the end of the lockdown. The distribution of books and other welfare schemes would be announced later. Regarding the exams for class 12 students, Chief Minister MK Stalin held a meeting with School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.
Meanwhile Principals of schools wanted to know the modalities for awarding marks for class 10 students as their exams were cancelled. Last year, marks were awarded based on their performance in the quarterly and half yearly exams but this year these exams could not be conducted. It is expected that marks may be awarded based on the performance of students in the quarterly and half yearly exams of class 9 and some weightage may be given to class tests.
