The World Health Organization said that it was not concerned for now that the spread of monkeypox beyond the African countries could turn into a global pandemic.
The UN health agency has voiced concern over this unusual situation but reiterated that there was no reason to panic as the virus spreads only through close contact and does not cause severe disease. However, it was important to take necessary steps to stop the spread of the virus.

Monkeypox is said to be related to smallpox which killed millions of people around the world every year before it was eradicated in 1980. It is said to be less severe than smallpox and most people recover within 3 to 4 weeks. Its initial symptoms include high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a blistery chickenpox like rash. It is unclear if it is airborne or transmitted through droplets.
