In a tragic accident, three polytechnic students from Hindustan Polytechnic College in Coimbatore Tamil Nadu drowned in Walayar dam after they were sucked into a sandpit.
A group of five students- Sanjay, Anto. Poornesh, Rahul and Pranav went to bathe in the Pichanur area of the dam at around 1.30 p.m. on Monday. One student, Sanjay got stuck in a sandpit initially and two of his friends, Anto and Poornesh tried to rescue him but they also got sucked into the current.
Rahul and Pranav somehow managed to swim to safety and alerted the locals about their 3 friends.
Search operations were conducted till late in the night by the Kanjikode fire force, Palakkad fire station and a scuba team. District Police Chief RK Viswanath also reached the spot. However, they could not trace the 3 boys.
