21 year old college student set to become Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram

Arya Rajendran aged 21 and a student of BSc Mathematics at All Saints College is all set to become the youngest Corporation Mayor in Kerala and one of the youngest mayors in the country. Earlier, one Suman Koli had become the Mayor of Bharatpur Corporation in Rajasthan at the age of 21 in the year 2009. Nuthan Rathore became the Mayor of Firozabad Municipal Corporation in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 at the age of 31. There was another young mayor as well, Sanjeev Naik who became the Mayor of Navi Mumbai at the age of 23 in 1995.

A formal announcement regarding Arya’s nomination is expected shortly. Arya’s father K.M. Rajendran is an electrician and an active CPM worker. Her mother Sreelatha is a homemaker and an LIC agent. Her brother Aravind is an automobile engineer employed in the Middle East. The entire family are supporters of the CPM and Arya was in the CPM since she was in Class 5.
Though Arya has not yet been informed of her candidature, she said that she was willing to take up any responsibility. She was elected to the Corporation Council from Mudavanmugal ward and sworn in on December 21. Arya lives with her parents in a rented accommodation in Thiruvananthapuram.
