Women in distress can call a single number to get police, medical, legal, psycho- social or rescue shelter assistance shortly. An emergency helpline 181 will be launched very soon. Right now there is a helpline 1091 providing police assistance.
The new helpline will be round the clock, toll free and will provide all types of assistance and information to women. It will function from the Amma Call Centre premises in Ambattur. The staff are social workers who are trained to handle the grievances of the callers. The helpline will also provide information about the law, existing schemes and government programmes related to women empowerment and protection.
