Halima Cisse, a 25 year old woman from Mali gave birth to 9 babies. Doctors had detected that there were 7 babies inside her womb but the woman had fascinated the entire West African nation by giving birth to 9 babies. As she needed specialist care, she was flown to Morocco where she gave birth.
The newborns include 5 girls and 4 boys and are all doing well. Halima is doing well too, said Mali’s Health Minister Fanta Siby. She was kept informed by the Malian doctor who accompanied Halima to Morocco. She congratulated the medical teams of Mali and Morocco for their professionalism and the happy outcome of the pregnancy.

The nonuplets were delivered by caesarean section. Halima was expected to give birth to 7 babies according to ultrasound tests conducted in Morocco and Mali. It is said that nonuplets are extremely rare and that medical complications in multiple births of this kind often meant that some of the babies did not reach full term. Halima has now joined a small pantheon of mothers of nonuplets. The mother and the babies will return home in a few weeks.
